FiLBooks and Fraglich Publishing are proud to dedicate the second edition of this book, a silent resistance written into history, to our resistance to reclaim our democratic rights and make our voices heard in Turkey. This edition comes with a statement reflecting on these days which Turkey’s democracy is fighting for its life.
 
“Hayal & Hakikat” contains photographs of 20th century prisoners from the photo albums of Sultan Abdulhamid II, the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Among Abdulhamid II’s many interests were detective novels and crime fiction In the 25th year of his reign he ordered all murder convicts to be photographed with their hands visible, in preparation for a planned amnesty. He has been moved by pseudo-scientific information he had read in a crime novel that “any criminal with a thumb joint longer than the index finger joint, is inclined to murder.” To this end, the photographs in this book show the subjects’ hands for the purpose of classification.
The first edition of “Hayal & Hakikat” won the ‘Best International Photobook of the Year’ award at PHotoESPAÑA 2021 and was a finalist at the 2020 Paris Photo Aperture Photobook Awards, 2021 Rencontres d’Arles Book Awards, and 2022 Singapore International Photography Festival, and was longlisted at the 2021 Kraszna-Krausz Photobook Awards.
