After many years of working with we’ve landed on the perfect combo of microphones to capture his Alto Saxophone. Andrew loves to hear the bright bite of his alto, and that’s something a dark ribbon won’t capture on its own. Ribbons tend to be the default for horn mics as they soften the edges on the high end perfectly. But if the player wants a bit more brightness, instead of reaching for the EQ k**b, adding a second mic can help immensely! So after trying a few different mics, we have discovered that the .berlin u67 tube mic, is Andrew’s favorite mic on his horn. When combined with a dark ribbon like the we are able to capture the smooth warmth of the instrument while maintaining the true bite and presence with the .
