Before making my way to the altar, my 3-year-old grandson gripped my hand tightly and murmured, “Grandpa, she h!t Mommy.” He then gestured toward the woman I was about to marry... and drew a small USB drive from his clothing that completely dismantled her web of deception.
“Grandpa, please don’t marry her... she h!t my mom while you were away.”
Walter Hayes stopped dead in his tracks in the corridor of the Manhattan hotel, a mere 10 minutes before he was scheduled to step into the banquet room. Inside, 120 attendees awaited him, accompanied by mariachi melodies, pristine white floral arrangements, and champagne flutes prepped for the toast.
His little grandson, Noah, was clutching his fingers with an intensity that felt unreal for a child of his age. He was dressed in an oversized gray suit, his shoelaces were unevenly knotted, and a lopsided bow tie rested under his chin. However, he wasn't joking around. He wasn't having a meltdown. His deep brown eyes were locked onto the bridal suite door with a terrified expression that sent shivers down the older man's back.
Walter crouched down to meet his eye level.
“Who h!t your mommy, little guy?”
Noah hesitantly lifted a shaky finger and pointed down the corridor.
Standing right there was Rebecca.
The very woman Walter was supposed to wed that afternoon.
Rebecca Collins, looking sophisticated and styled like a high-fashion model, wore a pristine ivory lace dress and a picture-perfect smile. She was chuckling with a pair of bridesmaids while a photographer fixed her veil. She appeared serene, gentle, and absolutely flawless. This was the identical woman who, over the past two years, had fetched his coffee at work, prepared him hot soup when he fell ill, and assured him that she adored his family as if they were her own flesh and bl00d.
Walter noticed the ambient noise of the hotel slowly fading away.
His daughter, Emily, had not yet shown up for the ceremony. Earlier that morning, she sent a message claiming she was suffering from a migraine and would probably be delayed. Rebecca had previously insisted that Emily was simply resentful because he was taking a new wife six years after becoming a widower.
“Your daughter just refuses to accept me, Walter,” Rebecca would often claim. “But I can wait. True love requires patience.”
Walter had truly wanted to trust her words.
Now, Noah was cowering behind his leg, treating Rebecca as if she were a wild predator on the loose.
“Where is your mommy right now?” Walter gently inquired.
“She's with Aunt Sarah,” Noah murmured quietly. “Mommy told me not to stay with her.”
Walter swallowed forcefully.
Emily was supposed to be recovering at her place in Brooklyn Heights. His younger sister, Sarah, resided over in Park Slope. None of these details were lining up.
“Did mommy share anything else with you?”
Noah darted another look at Rebecca. Then, reaching into his tiny jacket pocket, he extracted a scratched, black USB flash drive.
“She told me that if she couldn't wake up for a long time, I had to make sure you got this.”
Walter's knees nearly buckled beneath him.
Before he could probe any further, Rebecca pivoted around. The smile vanished from her lips for a split second before she approached them, wearing that same manufactured sweetness she always projected when others were watching.
“Walter, darling, they are getting ready to announce our entrance. Everyone is wondering where you went.”
Noah instinctively took another step back.
Walter quietly slid the flash drive into his own suit pocket.
“I just need five minutes.”
Rebecca cast a glance down at the young boy.
“What was Noah saying to you?”
“Just typical grandfather-and-grandson talk.”
“Now isn't the moment to be playing around,” she countered, her smile remaining but her jaw noticeably tense. “We have guests waiting, the local press is here, and your business partner is sitting out there. You cannot leave me stranded.”
“I told you, five minutes.”
Rebecca gazed at him as if attempting to peer inside his head. She then extended a hand to graze his arm, but Noah let out a startled whimper and buried himself further behind Walter's leg.
“Noah is just exhausted,” Walter stated. “Head into the ballroom.”
Rebecca stood completely still.
“Walter...”
“Head into the ballroom.”
His tone carried such authority that the bridesmaids nearby completely dropped their act of not eavesdropping.
Walter guided Noah into the private room where he had changed earlier. He firmly locked the door. With shaking fingers, he booted up his laptop. The flash drive held only one single folder.
REBECCA.
Contained within it were captured text conversations, financial records, images of legal paperwork, and a video file captured right in the kitchen of Walter’s own residence.
He clicked on the most recent file.
The footage showed Emily covertly recording from the hallway. Rebecca’s voice echoed sharply and distinctly.
“I told you to stop digging into my business.”
“My father deserves to know exactly what you are planning,” Emily fired back.
The sharp crack of a sla:p resonated loudly through the audio.
That was followed by a forceful thud against a wooden table.
Emily cried out from the sudden p@in.
Rebecca then spoke with a chilling calmness that barely felt human.
“By the time your father actually puts the pieces together, the property, the savings accounts, and every single thing he ever built will already belong to me.”
A sudden knock rattled the dressing room door.
“Walter, open this door.”
It was Rebecca.
Noah immediately clamped his hands over his ears.
And Walter suddenly understood that he wasn’t dealing with a jittery bride-to-be.
He was standing face-to-face with a vicious trap wrapped in white lace.
And nobody could have ever predicted what was going to unfold next.

PART 2: Walter shut the laptop, but he didn’t unlock the door.
"Honey, what are you doing in there?" Rebecca asked from the hallway.
"Changing my tie."
"You’ve already changed it twice."
"Then I guess this makes 3."
Silence followed.
Then the sharp sound of Rebecca’s heels moved away along the hallway.
Walter called Emily.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Finally, he called Sarah.
"Is Emily with you?"
A pause came from the other end.
Walter’s chest tightened.
"Yes."
"Put her on."
"She’s sleeping."
"Noah told me Rebecca hit her."
Sarah let out a long breath as if she had been holding it in for hours.
