The Greek Theatre of Taormina (Teatro Antico di Taormina) is one of Sicily’s most spectacular ancient sites. It was originally built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, then significantly expanded and remodeled by the Romans.

What makes it especially famous is the setting: the stage looks out over Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, making it one of the most dramatic ancient theaters in the world. The Greeks primarily used it for dramatic performances, while the Romans later adapted it for spectacles and gladiatorial games.

Much of what you see today—particularly the massive brick structures around the stage—comes from the Roman period, while some of the older stone foundations and seating date back to the Greek era.

Fun fact: the theater is still used for concerts and performances today, nearly 2,300 years after it was first built.
