As a bass player, I tend to use a lot of compression, but that’s part of my tone and apparently works fine. As a music enthusiast and they guy who seats down and enjoy music, I can get distracted or not able to enjoy a record if hyped compression and distortion was stupidly applied. As Mastering engineer, applying compression is a task where I spent some time trying not to sacrifice energy and dynamics but focusing in the energy I can carefully apply to the material. But at the end of the day, some albums in history sound good with heavy compression and distortion and some are really thrown in garbage because of the same treatment.
