A magical encounter on a night drive in Liwonde National Park.

Out in the darkness, the beam of the spotlight picked up a pair of eyes, and there, almost perfectly camouflaged in the grass, was a beautiful Serval. With its long legs, oversized ears and incredible markings, this elusive African cat is rarely seen, making this unexpected encounter all the more special.

For a few moments, the Serval paused in the spotlight before disappearing silently back into the night. One of those unforgettable wildlife encounters that reminds you never quite know what’s waiting around the next corner.

Some landscapes tell a story. In British Columbia’s Nass Valley, that story is written in fire, language and survival.

Travelling through the ancestral lands of the Nisg̱a’a Nation, writer James Draven | Travel writer & editor encounters a landscape shaped by one of Canada’s deadliest volcanic eruptions – where vast lava fields, waterfalls, forests and the Nass River form the backdrop to a much deeper story.

For generations, the Nisg̱a’a faced attempts to suppress their language, ceremonies and cultural traditions. Yet knowledge was passed down, stories were kept alive and traditions endured.

From the extraordinary lava landscapes of Anhluut’ukwsim Lax̱mihl Angwinga’asanskwhl Nisg̱a’a to the Nisg̱a’a Museum and the communities of the Nass Valley, this is a journey into a culture whose connection to the land remains resolute.

Their language is more than a means of communication. It is survival.

Across the islands of North Jutland, some of Denmark’s most interesting producers are turning to the landscapes and waters around them for inspiration – from Læsø’s famous salt, seaweed and sweet langoustines to oysters from the Limfjord, locally brewed b**r and seafood pulled fresh from the water.

In our latest JRNY online feature, Ailsa Sheldon island-hops through northern Denmark, meeting the people helping to reshape perceptions of Danish cuisine – with plenty of memorable meals along the way.
