SEEKING PRODUCERS, DIRECTORS, CAST AND CREW for:
"THE GOOD AMERICANS"
A hip hop musical about America… about us.
"In the smoke of January 6th, a hip-hop musical follows two women forced to decide if the American Dream is a promise worth dying for or a lie worth leaving behind. It’s Hamilton meets Do The Right Thing, a visceral, rhythmic exploration of whether you can truly love a country that is actively breaking your heart."
"When politicians and billionaires fail us, we must rely on artists to explore the truths of today and dream the possibilities of tomorrow."
FROM THE FIRST SCENE OF "THE GOOD AMERICANS":
INT. COFFEE SHOP - NIGHT
SANDRA, a mixed Asian/Caucasian-American woman in her late 20s or 30s, stands at a podium, with a covid mask on. A small AUDIENCE faces her, all similarly masked. Sandra places some pages on the podium, removes her mask and smiles at the Audience.
INT. SMALL HALL - NIGHT
ABBY, an African American woman in her late 20s or 30s, steps up to a podium, Covid masked. A small AUDIENCE faces her, all masked. Abby removes her mask.
INTERCUT BETWEEN SANDRA AND ABBY
SANDRA
I’d like to read a few poems from my latest collection, “Buried Seeds.”
Sandra’s Audience APPLAUDS appreciatively but politely.
ABBY
I know.
(beat)
I know the pain and fear and anger you must be feeling. Just another day. Just another African American lying dead on the streets, beaten, choked, shot, tased.
SANDRA
Sometimes poetry
is just a scream of pain
into the darkness
again and again,
knowing there is no answer,
not even an echo,
and the darkness just swallows,
and silently laughs.
But despair
is not air,
we cannot breathe it
and live,
we can only resist it
and continue to give
love...
ABBY
We die. With every passing day, every body, with every lie told to us by those charged with protecting us, we die. And though we individually may not die today or tomorrow, we all die when even one of us dies. No, when even one of us is murdered! Again. And again, and again, and again...
ABBY’S AUDIENCE
And again, and again, and again...
Sandra’s Audience continues to APPLAUD politely.
