???????? KNOWLEDGE EVERY NEW MOM SHOULD KNOW: THE 3 STAGES OF LABOR
If you're pregnant or preparing for your first birth, understanding the basic stages of labor can help you know what your body may be going through.
Every birth is different, and labor doesn't look exactly the same for everyone. But generally, childbirth is described in three main stages. ????✨
1️⃣ STAGE ONE — CONTRACTIONS & CERVICAL DILATION
This is usually the longest stage of labor.
It begins with contractions that gradually become stronger, longer, and closer together. During this stage, the cervix gradually effaces (thins) and dilates (opens) to about 10 cm.
For some moms, early labor can take many hours, while active labor can progress more quickly or slowly depending on the individual.
❤️ Your body is preparing for your baby to make the journey through the birth canal.
2️⃣ STAGE TWO — PUSHING & BIRTH
Once the cervix is fully dilated, the second stage begins.
This is when you may feel the urge to push as your baby moves through the birth canal.
With guidance from your healthcare team, you work with your body's contractions to help deliver your baby.
And then comes the moment you've been waiting for…
???? Your baby is finally here. ❤️
That first cry.
Those tiny fingers.
That first look.
After months of pregnancy, you finally get to meet the little person you've been waiting for.
3️⃣ STAGE THREE — DELIVERING THE PLACENTA
The birth isn't quite finished yet.
After your baby is born, your uterus continues contracting and the placenta separates from the uterine wall and is delivered.
This stage is usually much shorter than the first two stages, but your healthcare team will continue monitoring you carefully for your safety.
And then…
You can finally take a breath. ????❤️
Three stages.
One incredible journey.
One life-changing moment.
Labor can be physically and emotionally challenging, but every mother's experience is unique. Your healthcare team can explain what to expect based on your individual pregnancy and birth plan.
