California Wood Structure Eaves and Gutter Systems – An Analysis of Six Types
(Written from the perspective of a general contractor + California building code requirements)

1|Simplest Form (Simple Eave + Exposed Gutter)
Common in: Warehouses, sheds, factories, and accessory buildings where aesthetics are not a priority.
Key Construction Points
• Install a galvanized iron gutter directly alongside the rafters.
• Suspend with wire or gutter hangers.
• The roof overhangs by only about 2 inches.
• Uses a standard downspout for drainage.
California Code Highlights
• Exposed gutters must have a minimum positive slope of 1/16” per foot.
• CRC R903: Roof drainage must be directed away from the building to prevent ponding water.
• A metal drip edge is required at the wall connection; it's mandatory for new roofs in California.
Pros and Cons
✔ Cheap, simple, and fast to install.
✘ Prone to denting, short lifespan, and unattractive appearance.
✘ Not suitable for residential facades.

2|Flat Roof & Parapet (Flat Roof with Internal Drainage)
Common in: Commercial buildings, modern-style homes, and flat-top structures.
Key Construction Points
• Install a metal-lined sump on the inside of the parapet wall.
• Use an internal drainage system (Scupper → Conductor Head → Downspout).
• The roof deck must have a waterproof membrane (e.g., Torch-down, TPO, PVC).
• The sump is the lowest point, channeling water to the metal scupper outlet.
California Code Highlights
• CBC 1503: Flat roofs must have a minimum slope of 1/4” per foot.
• CBC 1503.4: An overflow scupper is required to prevent water ingress from clogged drains.

Sloping roof + Flat roof (parapet wall) junction node

What is this node?
This is a typical waterproofing assembly profile of a "sloped roof drainage → flat roof → parapet wall".
Common in:
• Hybrid buildings with California flat roofs + attic sloped roofs
• Adding an ADU or patio roof to an existing house
• Split-level structures
• Renovation projects combining modern and traditional homes
The primary design goals: waterproofing, leak prevention, and thermal break prevention.

Analysis by Assembly Zones (Layer-by-layer explanation)
I've divided it into three zones: the left sloped roof, the middle transition node, and the right flat roof/parapet wall.

① Left: Sloped Roof Assembly
The left side of the diagram shows:
a. Roof sheathing
Typically OSB or plywood.
b. Roof covering (shingles / tile underlayment)
The diagram shows a multi-layer system, including a ventilation gap and a roof membrane.
c. Attic insulation (within the sloped roof rafters)
The light-colored, mesh-like part is insulation batts (fiberglass/mineral wool).
d. 350mm eave depth
This represents the roof thickness plus structural depth.
California key point:
Water from the sloped roof must be completely directed away and must not flow back into the flat roof structure.
A continuous waterproofing layer (WRB + underlayment) is required.

② Middle: The "Valley/Transition Node" from the sloped roof to the flat roof
This is the most prone-to-leak area. The diagram uses an orange path to show the entire water flow, representing:
a. An "L"-shaped + "bent corner" continuous waterproofing flap (flashing + membrane)
This layer is the core of the waterproofing:
• Extends from underneath the sloped roof
• Turns downward
• Enters the valley of the flat roof
• Then flares out to the exterior of the parapet wall
This is a typical "continuous saddle / cricket flashing" detail.
b. Dimensions like 186mm, 344mm, 100mm
These are the heights and thicknesses of the structural layers, ensuring:
• Sufficient space for the waterproofing layers
• Prevention of thermal breaks
• Structural support
c. Water from the sloped roof must drain unimpeded into the flat roof
No uphill slopes, reverse slopes, or depressions are allowed.

③ Right: Flat Roof (6° slope) + Parapet Wall
The right side of the diagram shows:
a. Flat roof slope of 6° (approximately 10.5%)
A flat roof must have a slope.
California CBC requirement:
A minimum of 2% (1/4" per foot)
This diagram shows a steeper slope (6°) for extra security.
b. Roof assembly thickness of 300mm
This includes:
• The sloped layer (for drainage)
• Waterproofing membrane (e.g., TPO, Torch-down, Modified Bitumen)
• Protection layer
• Insulation layer

This technique is very common in Craftsman, Shingle-style, Cape Cod, and Transitional architecture to transform a straight wall into a naturally flared "skirt" that covers the stone base, achieving an architectural detail that is both "heavy and refined."
