MPW and World Bank Launch Three-Day Risk-Informed Urban Planning Training to Strengthen Resilient City Development.

The Ministry of Public Works, in collaboration with the World Bank through the Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP), has launched a three-day technical training on Risk-Informed Urban Planning aimed at strengthening urban development and resilience across Liberia.

The training, which began on June 17, 2026, in Monrovia, brings together representatives from key government ministries, agencies, and municipal authorities to enhance their capacity in urban planning, land use management, zoning, and investment prioritization.

Participants include officials from institutions responsible for public works, housing, land administration, disaster risk management, climate and environmental protection, hydrometeorology, finance, and local government. Municipal teams from Monrovia, Paynesville, Buchanan, Gbarnga, and Ganta are also taking part in the program.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Public Works Minister Roland Layfette Giddings stressed the need for Liberia to move away from reactive development practices that have contributed to unregulated settlements and inadequate infrastructure.

Minister Giddings noted that communities have often been established in wetlands, while roads have been constructed without proper drainage systems capable of withstanding Liberia’s heavy rainfall.

He emphasized that the country's newly enacted Zoning Law provides a legal framework for orderly growth, public safety, and urban resilience. According to the Minister, the law establishes urban resilience zones and requires structures in flood-prone areas to be elevated above projected flood levels.

The three-day training is designed to foster a shared understanding of risk-informed planning among national and local stakeholders. Participants will gain practical skills to assess existing planning systems, identify priority risks, and apply risk analysis to guide development decisions.

The program will also introduce the Restrict-Condition-Promote framework, a planning tool intended to support zoning decisions, infrastructure placement, and development control measures.

Officials say the initiative marks a significant step toward transforming urban planning and development control in Liberia by promoting safer, more inclusive, and economically sustainable cities.

The training forms part of the broader urban capacity development agenda under the Liberia Urban Resilience Project.

The government of Equatorial Guinea has resigned after failing to meet key performance targets, according to the country’s vice president. The president's son and the country's vice president, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, said on X that the prime minister had presented the government's resignation because it had barely met 10% of its targets. He didn't specify which targets the government was expected to achieve, but a statement by the ruling party said the president had observed that the government fostered corruption and failed to diversify the economy. The vice-president said the resignation was in line with "the principle that responsibility in public management must be accompanied by results."

Disadvantaged Youths Call for Rehabilitation Reform, Demand Vocational Training and Better Reintegration Support.

By: Joseph Kollie

A group of disadvantaged youths has expressed growing concern over the conditions and effectiveness of rehabilitation centers in Liberia, calling on the government and relevant stakeholders to implement meaningful reforms that will help transform their lives.

Speaking during an engagement with our reporter on Tuesday, several youths said they are exhausted by life on the streets and emphasized that many of them never intended to become involved in harmful activities or street living.

According to them, while rehabilitation centers are designed to provide support and recovery opportunities, many fail to offer vocational and trade training programs that can equip residents with practical skills for self-reliance.

The youths argued that after spending months or even years in rehabilitation facilities, they often leave without any employable skills or educational opportunities, making it difficult for them to secure jobs and rebuild their lives.

They stressed that the absence of trade schools and vocational training within rehabilitation programs leaves many former residents vulnerable to returning to the streets, where poverty, unemployment, and social pressures continue to pose significant challenges.

"We are tired of street life," one youth explained. "Many of us want a better future, but when we leave the rehab centers without learning a trade or skill, it becomes difficult to survive, and some people end up returning to the same conditions they tried to escape."

The group is therefore appealing to the Government of Liberia, development partners, and humanitarian organizations to establish vocational training programs within rehabilitation centers, including courses in carpentry, plumbing, tailoring, computer literacy, mechanics, agriculture, and other income-generating skills.

King Gray Township Chief Raises Alarm Over Worsening Drug Crisis, Says 85% of Residents Involved.

By: Joseph Kollie

KING GRAY TOWNSHIP, MONTSERRADO COUNTY – The Town Chief of King Gray Township Trokon Kpanneh has expressed serious concern over what he describes as an escalating drug crisis in the community, claiming that the township has become a major hub for drug-related activities.

According to Trokon, an estimated 85 percent of the township's 12,000 inhabitants are either directly or indirectly involved in drug activities, a situation he says is threatening the future of the community, especially its young people.

The Chief disclosed that efforts by his administration to combat the spread and use of illicit substances have been met with resistance from some residents, including parents who he says oppose measures aimed at reducing drug abuse among disadvantaged youths.

He further revealed that his commitment to addressing the problem has placed his personal safety at risk. According to him, he has received multiple threats from individuals warning him against taking a firm stance on drug-related activities in the township.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Kpanneh says he remains determined to continue advocating for a safer and healthier community. He is calling on the Government of Liberia, law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and development partners to intervene urgently to address the growing crisis.

Meanwhile, residents are urging authorities to strengthen anti-drug programs, provide rehabilitation opportunities, and create vocational and educational programs that will help young people build productive lives away from drugs and crime.
