Chand Baori, located in the village of Abhaneri near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, is estimated to have been built between the 8th and 9th centuries AD.
This stepwell is a deep four-sided structure, featuring 3,500 narrow steps arranged in a perfect geometric pattern that descend 13 stories. The arid climate has weathered the sandstone, creating textures, but the water at the bottom maintains its allure. Chand Baori demonstrates the ingenuity of ancient water management techniques.
Here, architecture becomes a mirror reflecting the human desire to control nature and connect with something larger than life. The deep, dark staircases lead to the life-giving water, creating a poetic paradox: a descent into darkness to reach enlightenment.
