Artists often lose their music forever. Why? The rules make it tough.
Think of a song you love. The artist who created it likely doesn’t own it. They signed a deal, and their music went to a company. Think they get it back someday? Most don’t, unless they navigate a tricky process.
I was shocked to learn this: U.S. law lets artists reclaim their songs after 35 years, but it’s not simple. They have to:
• Know this hidden rule exists
• Track the exact date of their contract
• File special paperwork at the right time (2–10 years before year 35)
• Send it to whoever owns their music now
• Hope the company doesn’t push back
Miss one step? Their songs—their life’s work—stay out of their hands. Forever. Some people get help, but most don’t know where to start.
This is about fairness. Who should own the art that inspires us? Have you seen creators lose control of their work in other fields? Let’s discuss! Share your thoughts below.
