A 30-year-old is about to play in the NCAA next season, and you'll never believe how he got there.

Growing up, Ramel Bethea never thought basketball was in his future.

When he graduated high school in 2014, he never played basketball and went straight to work.

He worked at Dunkin Donuts for a year then spent his next 4 at a Harris Teeter grocery store before he got recruited to join the Marines.

Since he had a visible tattoo on his lower arm, he was recommended to join the Navy instead.

At this point, Bethea was 23 years old and stood 6'3".

He claims that somewhere along the way during his training with the Navy, he got a 5-inch growth spurt and grew to 6'8" with a 7'4" wingspan.

With those kinds of measurables, Bethea finally decided to learn the game of basketball in 2022.

Fast forward to 2024, Bethea chose to move on from the navy to get a college degree.

He'd join MiraCosta junior College in California as a 28-year-old and balled out his freshman season.

🔸 12.7 PPG
🔸 9.7 RPG
🔸 4.5 BLKS

He'd receive D1 offers from multiple schools but committed to Green Bay where he was given 3 years of eligibility by the NCAA.

Unfortunately, Bethea didn't get to play much with Green Bay.

🔸3.6 PPG
🔸2.6 RPG
🔸1.3 BLKS

He entered the transfer portal this year and has committed to play for Citadel this upcoming season as a 30-year-old junior.

For someone who spent 5 years in the Navy and didn't start playing basketball till 4 years ago, how could you not root for Ramel Bethea?

The NIL era continues to change college basketball forever 😳💰

Not long ago, staying in school meant passing up millions.

Now, some college stars are making more money than NBA draft picks.

Milan Momcilovic’s decision is another reminder that the path to the NBA looks very different than it did just a few years ago.

For many players, college basketball has become a business of its own.
