Deputy Sheriff Betty Uriegas succumbed to injuries she received in a single-vehicle crash on August 17, 1994, around 2:15 a.m.

While on patrol on Georgia Highway 13 during a rainstorm from Tropical Storm Beryl, Deputy Uriegas observed a group of people on private property. After turning her patrol vehicle around to investigate, she heard gunfire and hydroplaned on the wet road, crashing into a tree. She was stranded in her vehicle until another officer came to her aid. The group had dissipated by the time responding officers arrived.

Deputy Uriegas was transported to the hospital with a broken neck and remained a C4 quadriplegic. On August 8, 2026, she suffered pulmonary failure related to her injuries.

Tropical Storm Beryl caused significant damage to Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, along the East Coast, and throughout the Northeast, resulting in over $74 million in damages.

Deputy Uriegas had served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office for nine years. In 1996, she carried the Olympic Torch at the Atlanta Paralympic Games. Survivors include her husband, daughter, son, her mother, two sisters, nieces, nephews, and two grandchildren.

Police Officer Christopher DeLong Jr. was shot and killed responding to a domestic disturbance near the 900 block of Hazelwood Road, in the Southeast Park area, at approximately 10:41 a.m.

Officer DeLong had initially responded to a report of property damage from a domestic dispute. After leaving the original call, he identified a subject and vehicle matching the reported description at a nearby location and called it in. When backup officers arrived a few minutes later, Officer DeLong and another officer had been shot. Officer DeLong succumbed to his wounds at the scene.

The suspect died at the scene.

Officer DeLong had served with the Columbia Police Department for nearly two years. Survivors include his wife and two children.

Correctional Officer Gerald Magee was killed after he was taken hostage inside the New Mexico State Penitentiary.

He was stabbed with a knife several times and beaten with blunt instruments by inmates.

Three inmates were charged with his murder. The charges were dismissed against one, and the other two were acquitted.

Officer Magee had served with the New Mexico Corrections Department for 14 months and previously served as a police officer in Newton Township and Newton Falls, Ohio.

Police Officer Anthony Creed was killed in a fall from his horse as he was engaged in the equestrian exercise program at the Mounted Unit's headquarters on the grounds of the South Shore Country Club at 7059 S. South Shore Drive.

In 1979, Officer Creed had survived a gunshot wound to his head from a robbery suspect. The suspect only served four years of an 11-year sentence for assault to murder.

Officer Creed was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served with the Chicago Police Department for 10 years, assigned to the Mounted Unit. He is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, four sisters, and two brothers. His father also served with the Chicago Police Department.

Officer Cook died from an accidental gunshot wound sustained two days earlier when another officer's weapon discharged in police headquarters.

Officer Cook had only served as a reserve officer with the agency for 2 weeks prior to the shooting.

Investigator Jeska was killed in an automobile accident when a dump truck ran a red light and struck his cruiser. The impact knocked both vehicles into a utility pole. Investigator Jeska was killed instantly upon impact.

Investigator Jeska had been with the agency for 21 years and was survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons, both of whom are in law enforcement.
