Police Officer Daryle Holloway was shot and killed while transporting a prisoner to the Central Lockup at approximately 8:00 am.

A previous shift had arrested the prisoner for aggravated assault for firing one shot at a woman with a .40 caliber handgun. Responding officers located a .38 caliber handgun owned by the woman and one .40 caliber shell casing but did not locate the .40 caliber handgun. The subject was arrested and transported to the police station for questioning.

Officer Holloway was requested to transport the subject to Central Lockup following the interviews. The subject had been handcuffed behind his back but managed to maneuver his arms to the front of his body. He then produced the .40 caliber handgun he had kept concealed on his person, crawled through the vehicle's partition, and began struggling with Officer Holloway. Officer Holloway was shot during the ensuing struggle, causing his vehicle to crash into a utility pole near the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Elysian Fields Avenue.

The subject fled on foot after the vehicle crashed and was captured the next day after a brief chase that ended near the intersection of Reynes Street and St. Claude Avenue. He was arrested the following morning and charged with first-degree murder of a police officer, aggravated escape, and weapons charges. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2018.

Officer Holloway had served with the New Orleans Police Department for 22 years and was assigned to the 5th District. Survivors include two daughters, son, mother, grandmother, and ex-wife.

Corporal Jose Espericueta was shot and killed as he and other officers attempted to apprehend a subject who had threatened family members.

A woman flagged down officers in the area of Stewart Road and Business Highway 83 and told them that her son had just shot at her car with a handgun. Corporal Espericueta and other officers responded to the scene and located the subject, who then fled on foot.

As the man ran he turned and opened fire, striking Corporal Espericueta multiple times. Other officers returned fire and killed the man.

Corporal Espericueta had served with the Mission Police Department for 13 years and had previously served with the San Benito Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Trooper Jerry Smith was killed in a vehicle crash when his patrol car was struck head-on by another vehicle on Highway 26, two miles west of Bridgeport, in Morrill County.

An oncoming pickup truck crossed the center line after swerving to avoid another car that had stopped to make a left turn. The driver of the pickup truck was also killed in the crash.

Trooper Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Bronze Star recipient. He had served with the Nebraska State Patrol for five years and is believed to be the oldest recruit to complete the academy. He is survived by his wife and two adult children.

Lieutenant Clint Ventrca died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty while attending training at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy.

Lieutenant Ventrca had served with the Corinth Police Department for 21 years. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, parents, and siblings.

The Effects of COVID on Law Enforcement

Beginning in early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country began to contract COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Due to the nature of their job, law enforcement officers were required to work and interact with the community even as the majority of the country was self-quarantined. As a result, hundreds of officers died from COVID-related illnesses and other complications.

Corrections agencies, in particular, suffered tremendous losses due to the constant and close proximity between the corrections officers and large inmate populations. Since March 2020, ODMP has verified that over 900 law enforcement officers have died as the result of a confirmed or presumed exposure while on duty and continues to work with hundreds of other agencies that have suffered a COVID-related death.

Deputy Sheriff J'Mar Abel was killed in a vehicle crash on County Road 278 between Welch and Standing Rock.

He was assisting the Roanoke Police Department during a vehicle pursuit when his patrol SUV left the roadway while rounding a curve at about 4:30 pm. The patrol car overturned after striking a ditch on the side of the road.

He was tranpsorted to West Georgia Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The subject was apprehended.

Deputy Abel was killed on his two-year anniversary with the Chambers County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his father and fiancée.

Deputy Sheriff Jeffery Gathings was shot and killed during an escape at the Sheriff's Department.

He was working as a dispatcher when a man entered the jail, shot him, and freed two prisoners.

Deputy Gathings was survived by his wife, parents, and three brothers.

Police Officer Emilio Quinones-Santana was shot and killed while trying to stop a theft on Highway 3 in Carolina.

An off-duty officer had parked his car outside of a phone booth and left his keys and gun in it.

Officer Quinones-Santana and his partner located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit along PR-3. The suspect opened fire during the pursuit, striking Officer Quinones-Santa. The man was arrested after a successful PIT maneuver was conducted. The man was charged with murder.

Chief Deputy Bobby Biggerstaff was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by a drunk driver at 90 mph. Chief Deputy Biggerstaff was en route to Winfield, Texas to assist the Titus County Sheriff's Office with a fight call.

The drunk driver was also killed in the crash.

Chief Deputy Biggerstaff had served with the agency for 29 years. Chief Deputy Biggerstaff was the state of Texas' youngest sheriff elected in 1968 at the age of 23. He is survived by his wife (also a deputy sheriff), two daughters, three stepchildren, brother, sister, parents, and granddaughter.

Police Officer Pauline Hunchar-Harness died after falling from a metal staircase while on patrol at the Philadelphia International Airport.

She was investigating a suspicious noise in a building and fell as she descended the staircase. She suffered a fractured skull as a result of the fall.

Officer Hunchar-Harness had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for nine years. She is survived by her husband and two children.
