Another update to "The Vibe" playlist, this week featuring some bona fide gems. Follow playlist in bio!

Damu The Fudgemunk's ears were gripped by the perpetual, rhythmic motion of kicks and snares at the height of the Boom-Bap era, inspiring the son of classically trained musicians to begin his own self-taught quest into music. Following the trail of his favorite albums, beat by beat, to their dusty source in the crates of DC's record stores, he spent all waking hours devoted to the study of drum-break physics and layered samples so that he could apply these disciplines to his own productions. Home basement freestyles and beatmaking led to street performances, which led to studio work, which led to widespread fan applause and critical acclaim from the likes of Marley Marl, Pete Rock, DJ Spinna and DJ Premier. Now, Damu is a modern day Hip-Hop renaissance man; DJ, producer, MC, and multi-instrumentalist . While reminiscent of the sound of Boom-Bap's pioneers, there is more to Damu's production than the sum of his influences. He stands not in their shadows but atop their shoulders; making progressive beats for a core audience who know how Hip-Hop should sound.

Athletic Progression

Jonas Cook (keyboard), Jonathan J. Ludvigsen (drums) and Justo Gambula (bass) — are one of the most electric, live Danish bands in recent years. Hailing from Aarhus, the country’s second biggest city, the three young Danes are openly influenced by artists such as Herbie Hancock, D’Angelo and Flying Lotus.

When The Expansions self released their first single in 2013, the laid-back jazz funk of Lavender, it quickly gained strong support from soul and rare-groove aficionados including Kenny Dope, Dom Servini, Patrick Forge and Andy Smith. A run of shows followed and before long, when someone was asking if there was a soul-jazz band around to play with, “The Expansions” was the answer.
You can hear the influences of Idris Muhammad, Grover Washington, even parallels with South London peers Yussef Kamaal and Ruby Rushton.

Pianist, composer, and popular sideman Javier Santiago is one of the most promising voices in the international music scene today. As an accomplished producer/beatmaker, arranger and educator, Santiago has become a notable force in both the beat and hip-hop scenes as well as in the jazz world. The Minneapolis-born Santiago was exposed to a myriad of great music and talented musicians in his early years. Taking his inspiration and career endeavors to the next level, he furthered his path by relocating to New York City to attend The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music, then later moved out West, first to the Bay Area in 2017, and then to Los Angeles in 2021, which remains his home base.

Joy Gorilla

Based out of Los Angeles, music duo Magdalena Daniec and Adam Grab write and record (mostly) analog music. Heavily inspired by 70’s funk-fusion, esoteric prog, tropicalia, and modern electronic, they work with a rotating team of musicians to produce their own special brew

Nate Smith

Nate Smith is a drummer, composer, & producer from Chesapeake, Virginia. His visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming has led to three GRAMMY® nominations and work with esteemed artists, including: Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Brittany Howard, Van Hunt, The Fearless Flyers, Norah Jones, Chris Potter, and Somi. Smith fuses his original compositions with an eclectic mix of music, including everything
from jazz to R&B to hip-hop to pop.

Ezra Collective

is an ode to the sacred, yet joyous act of dancing. The album musically guides you through a night out in the city, from the opening of possibilities as a new evening spans out ahead, to dawn’s final hours as the night comes to a close.

This edition of the Vibe playlist features some really cool tunes - stuff we wish was playing on the radio these days. These are songs that you can put on repeat and never get tired of listening to. Subscribe in bio link!

1. Salami Rose Joe Louis is a genre traveler multi-instrumentalist female producer and a signee to Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label. She produces and records pretty much exclusively on her beloved Roland MV8800. Her debut record with Brainfeeder, 'Zdenka 2080', is a critically acclaimed, conceptual sci-fi epic that earned a nomination for Giles Peterson's Worldwide Awards Best Album of 2020. Since then, she has toured supporting Flying Lotus, Cinematic Orchestra, Toro y Moi, TuneYards, Clairo, and MNDSGN.

2. Kokoroko is a London-based septet led by Sheila Maurice-Grey and Onome Edgeworth playing a fusion of jazzand Afrobeat. In February 2019 they were named "ones to watch" by the Guardian, after their track "Abusey Junction" garnered 57 million views on YouTube. In February 2020 they won Best Group at the Urban Music Awards. In September 2020 they played BBC Promsat the Royal Albert Hall. Their name is an Urhobo word meaning "be strong" or “hard to break.”

3. Oscar Jerome 25 year old self made artist Oscar Jerome has been honing his craft as a musician and writer since a young age. He has worked as vocalist, guitarist and composer with countless acts and grown through the thriving South London music scene since he moved there 6 years ago.
Oscar’s song writing is motivated by politics, spirituality within music and life experiences. His creative vision is to always make music with sincerity and pay homage to his countless inspirations.

4. Bluestaeb is a Berlin based producer that caught our ears with his sublime keyboards and mellow-yellow vibes. But it won't make you sleepy - just the opposite: The music will uplift your heart and satisfy the mind whilst keeling your soul on its toes.

Each week we feature four artists that we feel epitomize the type of feel and sound that we here at 600Block think is next level. Please save, subscribe and share and help spread the good Vibes.

1. Soon Never Comes" by Stimulator Jones, aka Samuel Jones Lunsford, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, DJ, vocalist and songwriter born and raised amongst the nature and wildlife of Roanoke, VA. He's off the Stome Throw label, a level that always puts out top notch beats and cuts, so you know it's A+.

2. STORKS" by Silvan Strauss. Hamburg based producer and drummer Silvan Strauss counts as one of the outstanding new European jazz drummers who can easily shapeshift between jazz and its varieties ranging into urban contemporary music. In the last years he successfully worked with the likes of Maria João, Soweto Kinch, Omer Klein, Guinga, Farhot, Jazzrausch Bigband, Nils Landgren, Till Brönner. Strauss channels the immense input gained by all the different collaborations into his own project Toytoy where he produces and closely works with his band mates on their vision of experimental groove music.

3. Bonita Applebaum (Daylight)" by Soul Supreme. There’s a sense of duality in the work of Soul Supreme: jazz-minded, hip-hop-schooled. His acclaimed 45 records with reinterpretations of classic material by A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla, Madvillain, Mos Def, and Grandmaster Flash show how he carefully studies and dissects music to flip things upside down for something entirely new. Serving as tributes to both the sample originals as well as the golden-era productions.

4. "Careless" - Tiny Room Sessions" by Tony Sendo/Underground Canopy. Paris, France based Jazz/Hip Hop band. Underground Canopy has revealed as a prominent new face on the vibrant independent French jazz/hip-hop/groove scene.

“Chicago pianist, songwriter, and producer Cesar Pino writes music with a location in mind, be it a beach, a rooftop while looking up at the sky at night, or even somewhere in the mainframe of Tron thanks to a consistent use of keyboards and synthesizers. Donning the moniker C3zR, Pinos project combines his background as a classically trained and jazz pianist with the electronic funk or soul of his favorite artists like Kaytranada, Daft Punk, Robert Glasper. Anyone could find themselves in the world Pino creates in his electronically produced but soulful debut album, ‘Round Voyage.’ When enlisting Rax Tracks’ Noam Wallenberg (The Oh Mys, Woody Goss of Vulfpeck, REVERB) for mixing and mastering, Pino brought other local guests to contribute to the album, ranging from Chicago singers Ifeanyi Elswith and Travis Percy, Jamal Damien on trumpet, and guitarist Paolo Apuli. A Chicago based musician-her profound and ambitious sound bears bold influences in acoustic soul, alternative R&B, and pop. Her musical tapestry pays homage to her Puerto Rican culture with lyrics in English and Spanish. Adding to her unique magic is her mellifluous and soulful voice. Next on our lineup is the hip hop and creative resurgence himself, .

“Designer, muralist. rapper, and radio host PugsAtomz is a true hip-hop renaissance man. He has been able to tour the world performing his deep catalog, solo and with frequent collaborator DJ Vadim (The Electric, UK). His inspiration for all this stems from growing up in Englewood, where he would witness the performers on the Green Line train and see the murals and graffiti art in his neighborhood. Hip Hop Culture has always been his battery, so it was no surprise when he started a collective called The Nacrobats, in the mid 90’s. From that point, he began releasing albums from the collective and mixtapes frequently. By throwing parties and concerts at The Blvd Art Center and The Point Field House, Pugs solidified himself in the hip-hop scene including Open Mike Eagle, Psalm One, and more.”

As a pianist, vocalist, producer, and composer Cole has released 3 albums of original music and is currently working on his fourth, co- produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow, to be released 2020 on Ropeadope Records. Also an in- demand studio musician and touring performer, he has recorded and/or performed with the likes of Chance the Rapper, Gallant, Brett Dennen, Lupe Fiasco, Dave Shaw (of the Revivalists), Paula Cole, Dave King, Lucky Diaz, Naughty Professor, The Heard, Deep Fayed, and experimental jazz rock trio Hanging Hearts. His song “Hollywood Girl” was a finalist in the 2015 American Songwriting Awards and he is the recipient of a 2019 City of Chicago DCASE Artist Grant. He was also the co-founder of the Chicago artist collective The Gala.”
