It’s time to pack up my ADHD maximalist home of 8 years! So many mixed emotions as I go through this process.

I’m ready for the next chapter of adventure.
But can’t help but look back on all the growth I experienced in this home.

My executive function is in overdrive right now, sorting through all the colorful art, and collections.

This is was my home as I embraced my neurotype, launched two businesses, wrote two books and healed a broken heart. I found me here.

Now Im ready to leave the nest.

The Trajectory of the Undiagnosed ADHD Teen*

Over the last 13 years working with teens, Ive noticed a pattern. I often received referrals from PhP, IOP, and residential programs for teens that have been in treatment for years.

When exploring when, how and why things started for them, we have landed on this pattern. Yet, rarely have any often been assessed for a neurodevelopemental difference. Today Im focusing just on ADHD.

4th grade - Anxiety peaks
5th grade- Self esteem decreases
6th grade - Depression sets in
7th grade- SH and Eds begin
8th grade - Thoughts of SI
9th grade - Crash
10th grade - Disengaged
11th grade - Change to school structure
12th grade- Panic about future and loss of childhood.

This is not an absolute rule, or diagnostic in and of itself. Ages, grades, and intensity will vary for everyone, and much of this can and will appear with other diagnosis.

Familiarity with this trajectory is key for greater understanding of identifying and supporting ADHD brains and not just treating Anxiety and Depression without digging deeper.

How does this line up with your experience? Or with what you see in your practice?

Adventures of a therapist!
Come with me to Career day at MY elementary school!
This is my second year and I absolutely love it!

Normalizing mental heath conversation is one of my highest priorities. The movie Inside Out made that so much easier to talk about feelings with kinder and first graders!

Seeing their faces when I said that I once sat in the exact same classroom was everything… and the 6th grades got to see a pic of me with their teacher 25 years ago (omg I can’t believe it was really that long ago!

Staying a part of community means the world to me. Sharing emotional regulation tools with excited kids is my greatest passion.

Another reason why in love working for myself, I get to go on adventures!

My favorite moment in the Assessment process…
Is the moment I see the shoulders relax.

It usually comes after a question, or I provide a an example that is specific and nuanced to high masking women.

Their eyes get big, “yes, exactly that” and for that moment I can tell they feel seen. It’s a pivotal shift in the process, as the mask starts to come down.

That moment occurs at a different time for everyone, but it always happens.

I feel so honored to be a part of someone’s process of understanding themselves at a new level. So many of us have been in therapy for years, gaslit by medical providers and had to fight to be seen.

As much as I love providing assessments, I also love teaching how to provide them in an affirming way. so more clinicians, and therefore more client, have this experience.

If you provide assessment info you notice this moment too?
If you’ve been assessed do you remember if/when that feeling connected?

What to take a look inside my brain?

I think I may start sharing more about my internal workings, and my businesses internal thought process.

Task switching is really exhausting for my brain, and I often get caught in a freeze in between tasks.

business structure is so different than running a private practice (). There are obviously similarities, but I definitely feel a bigger learning curve with this one.

Are there new things you learned about your brain when setting up and running a business?

Hello, it’s Jamie.
I’m an AuDHD therapist on my third cup of coffee today. Is this week over yet?

Managing a lot of emotions over here, my own, my clients, and my community.

Just want to send a reminder that as wild as the press conference was on Monday. We still have our community, each other and all the progress we have made. Keep being all over you. You are valued, appreciated and loved.

Autistic people have always been here. Will always be here. And will not be deterred by some ignorant statements… we’ve heard them all our lives. This isn’t new.

I see you, I hear you, I’m with you.
