Legendary actor Gene Hackman, known for his iconic roles in The French Connection and Superman, has died at the age of 95. He and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead at their home in Santa Fe Summit on Wednesday, February 26, alongside their dog. According to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, there were no immediate signs of foul play, but the cause of death remains undisclosed.
Born Eugene Allen Hackman in San Bernardino, California in 1930, Hackman moved frequently during his childhood, eventually settling in Danville, Illinois. His early love for movies was influenced by his admiration for stars like Erroll Flynn and Jimmy Cagney. At 13, his father left the family, a moment Hackman credited for shaping his sensitivity to human behavior.
After a brief stint in jail at 16, Hackman enlisted in the Marines, serving until he was 19. Following his discharge, he moved around the country, eventually marrying Faye Maltese in 1956, with whom he later divorced after 30 years. In California, he joined the Pasadena Playhouse, where he developed a friendship with Dustin Hoffman.
Hackman's passing marks the end of an era for one of Hollywood's most respected actors, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances.
