Kilo Tango – Los Angeles musician Katie Mitchell wraps up some hard truths in a bright, sugary vocal style, while never obscuring the real nature of the lyrics.
Yes, there’s talk of sweets and cavities, but for Mitchell, the track began as a meditation on caving to self-destructive impulses. The song isn’t just about recovery, more that point before it when a person comes to realise what they are using to lose themself could easily result in them being lost forever. Still in the throes of the moment, the layered vocals and vibed-out guitar of Sweet Tooth are like a comedown in musical format, the edginess and angst just about to kick in.
“Sweet Tooth is very representative of where I’m at now,” says Mitchell. “Coming out of the chaos, slowing down, catching up on everything I’ve been pushing away that I needed to face. I wrote it two years ago after a night out drinking and partying.”
She continues, “At the time, I wasn’t thinking about getting sober, I was indulging in a lot of escapism, avoiding my problems and not dealing with past trauma. I feel like Sweet Tooth came from me subconsciously knowing that I was living a chaotic life, and that I would eventually have to make some changes.”
The song was produced, recorded and mixed by Evan Mui, and is out now on his label Paul Is Dead Records to download on Bandcamp and streamed on Spotify. Catch up with Kilo Tango on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about Sweet Tooth.
