In this thirty second installment of the Producer Spotlight Series we’re highlighting British Deep House Producer and DJ, Jimpster. Born into a musical family, Jimpster was influenced and encouraged by his father Roger Odell who is the drummer in the jazz-funk band Shakatak. It was there that he was first exposed to electronic synthesizers and recording equipment at around age 10. He started Freerange records in 1996, a label that has since found a niche in deep house with artists like Shur-I-Kan and Milton Jackson. Jimpster played in a live electronica band, The Bays, from 2002 until 2007, but eventually decided to focus on djing and his record label.
In 2007, his label Freerange was voted Best British Label by DJ Mag, in 2010 he won the Beatport titles: Best Deep House Producer and Best Deep House Remix of the year. As co-founder and A&R of Freerange, Delusions Of Grandeur and most recently Cyphon Recordings, he’s helped nurture an entire generation of producers, sharing his deep understanding of groove and sound design with those who came after him. Despite his three decades in the business and pivotal role in shaping the electronic music landscape, Jimpster remains relentlessly focused on who, or what, will come next, as excited as ever by discovering the freshest new talent and sounds to expose to the world.
Jimpster's discography is packed with both original tracks and remixes that make you move without even realizing it: there’s the spaced-out, trippy disco allure of “English Rose”, the groove-heavy slo-mo swagger of “The Sun Comes Up” (which is basically the soundtrack to that sunset), and let’s not forget the timeless “Dangly Panther.” Each track feels like a wave—a smooth ride that pulls you along effortlessly but leaves you wanting more. His remix of Osunlade’s Momma’s Groove has become iconic but he has also offered his golden touch to artists as diverse as Seal, Bob Marley, Kerri Chandler, Josh Wink and Adam Port to name just a few.
Jimpster’s music is a reflection of his unrelenting pursuit of musical depth in club music. A balance between nostalgic warmth and forward-focussed vision that continues to captivate listeners and dancers alike. For him, it’s not about creating music for the moment, but building sounds that resonate over time, long after the track has finished playing.
