One thing about hustling in this space, and carrying the mantle Sir Rodney Barnes once gave me as “The Hardest Working Woman in Comics,” is that it can sometimes feel like the work happens underground. That’s why it means so much when these ✨ pings ✨ come through reminding me that people really do see the grind and the passion behind it. 🥰

I’m honored to be highlighted alongside these incredible Sheroes who are out here blazing trails and kicking butt in the Black female geek space. 🤩

Check out how these Black women are making nerd money and monetizing from their passions doing what they love.

Misogyny really knows no end. 😩

Someone suggested we needed a counter to Turning Point’s “curriculum” — someone who could speak to younger generations and build a curriculum for kids.

I responded that Shero Comics is already doing this with our Young Grandmaster Choi curriculum. Then some random guy sarcastically chimes in: “Oh, that’ll really reach young men.”

What he doesn’t know is that more boys read Young Grandmaster Choi and follow Shero Comics than girls. The comic industry has always been male-dominated…I knew that going in. And frankly, that’s exactly why Shero Comics exists: not just to give women and girls of color the representation they deserve, but to inspire boys and young men to see women and girls as heroes too. 🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏻‍♀️🦸🏾‍♀️

Same story at SheroCon, so many men came out to hear women speak on our panels and visit the Shero Alley to discover female comic creators. My hope is that Shero helps chip away at some of that red-pill garbage that starts poisoning kids way too young. 😔

Also, dads have been some of our biggest supporters. They’re the ones sliding into my DMs to say their son or daughter loved the books. Why? Because Young Grandmaster Choi is a martial arts story 🥋 about bullying 😬, and that’s something every kid can relate to. From the workshops I do in schools and youth orgs, the proof is clear: these stories connect with ALL kids. 🙌🏾

And while we’re here... as you know, we’re selling the new Young Grandmaster Choi collector’s doll to raise money to do the next chapter.

You can get the doll here: www.sherocomics.com/store …and get a glimpse of the variant cover for Chapter 3 below. 🥰🥰🥰

In this panel from Chapter Two of my graphic novel Rayven Choi, twenty years after witnessing her parents’ assassination, Rayven returns to America to confront the FBI agent who sent her to Korea all those years ago.

In my comics, I never waste a chance to honor my Sheroes. 🦸🏽‍♀️ If you look closely at the TV screen, you’ll spot Assata Shakur’s government name on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. In screenwriting, we’d call this foreshadowing — or an Easter egg. At the time I wrote this, there was a million-dollar reward for her capture.

Years later, when I developed the Rayven Choi TV pilot—which went to several studios but never sold—Rayven’s journey mirrored Assata’s. She, too, became wanted by the government and was unable to return to the country she once called home.

Assata was my muse. Today, she is my ancestor. ✊🏾 Rest in power, Queen. 🕊️

This month, as my team and I lock in Shero Talks workshops for the fall, I’ve been reflecting on the many talks I’ve given over the past eight years. 🤓So I’m kicking off something new: “Moments of Shero” — a look back at some of the most memorable stops along the journey. 🥰

This week’s moment takes us back to 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩

While in town for Indonesia Comic Con, I was invited to speak at two schools. This clip is from right after a Shero Talk with students about college and choosing a major. The energy was electric — the students and teachers were so warm, and we shared plenty of laughs. 😂

But just after I left, my phone started ringing nonstop. It was the same day Lion Air Flight 610 crashed. What had been such a joyful morning instantly became bittersweet — a reminder of how fragile life can be. 😢

Still, I’m grateful I was able to be there, to connect, and to spark both laughter and reflection with those incredible students. By now, I hope many of them have become college graduates, thriving in their fields and pursuing their dreams. ✨💞
