Recently, people online have been debating whether it’s appropriate to bring iced coffee to a job interview.

People seem to be split on the topic. Does it matter if the coffee is iced or hot? Does the work environment play into it? Can the difference in opinion be chalked up to generational divides? bex castillo decided to ask some of our L.A. Times editors to weigh in.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Are mosquitoes worse this year in LA? Short answer: yes.

The Greater LA County Vector Control District ( ) says the Aedes aegypti population, those daytime “ankle biter” mosquitoes, has trended at least 30% higher than the five-year average so far in the month of September.

And the bites carry more risk than just an itch. Karen Garcia ‘s reporting shows West Nile virus cases in LA County are at their highest in more than a decade: 100 cases and 5 deaths this year, compared to 22 cases and 2 deaths last year.

Does blood type make you a mosquito magnet? The district says the evidence is inconclusive — but they do know mosquitoes track us by our CO2, body heat, and skin chemistry.

Getting bitten at home? You can submit a service request to the Greater L.A. County Vector Control District, just enter your address on their service request site to check if you’re covered.

And check your yard. A bottle cap of standing water is enough for these mosquitoes to lay eggs, especially after recent rain.

Have you ever wondered how a 20th century neon salesman sold their wares? bex castillo stopped by the home of husband and wife duo Dydia DeLyser and Paul Greenstein, who co-wrote the book “Neon: A Light History.” The pair share a love of all things neon and gave a tour of their historic neon salesman sample suitcases.

Together, the couple work with the Museum of Neon Art and occasionally showcase the suitcases there if enough people are interested. “It’s really fun when we can tell that history through a neon salesman sample suitcase,” said Dydia. “Because it comes alive, because those things tangible.”

Happy first day of fall.

Today is Tuesday, September 22, the autumnal equinox, which means we get about the same amount of daylight as darkness.

And sure, people love to give Southern California a hard time because we don’t get “classic” fall colors.

But we have our own signs that fall is here.

How do you celebrate fall in Los Angeles?

Have you ever wondered what’s going on with this old Sparkletts bottling plant on the border of Eagle Rock and Highland Park?

The building opened in 1929 and was designed by architect Richard D. King. The state-of-the-art facility was built above a natural spring and could pump over 200,000 gallons of water per day.

The plant was shuttered in 2025 after it was acquired by Primo Water. Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society moved quickly to nominate the building as a Historic-Cultural Monument, which was confirmed in June 2026.

The parcel of land across the street that was part of the original property is under new ownership and will likely be industrial. The plant itself is still under Primo Water’s ownership.

“There’s a lot of opportunity here to reinvent this site to something that’s really embraced by the community,” said Andrew Salimian, Director of Advocacy for Los Angeles Conservancy. He noted Helms Bakery in Culver City as an example of a historic site repurposed for modern use.

Did L.A. break any records? Sort of. And no.

Downtown L.A.’s all-time high is still 113°F, set Sept. 27, 2010. That record stands.

But the humidity? That’s another story. Southern California doesn’t keep great long-term humidity data, so we can’t call it official, but a UC climate scientist says parts of SoCal likely just had their most humid summer on record. Vid by Tom Carroll
