Rusty Santos

Artist / Producer / Mixer Rusty Santos is a musician and producer known for making avant garde music and experimental pop.

He first gained attention producing Animal Collective’s Sung Tongs and through his collaboration with Panda Bear on Person Pitch. His solo work explores subliminal territory, emerging from his nonlinear approach to music production and composition, creating inside of dreams, collaborating with new artists, and using the studio as an instrument. He invites the listener to step outside the conventio

nal norms of song and sound. Rusty’s catalog spans epochs, having produced and mixed records for artists like Born Ruffians, Dirty Projectors, and Dawn of Midi, and mastering albums for artists like Beach House and DJ Rashad. His roots in the acoustic and electronic psychedelia scenes, including collaborations with Black Dice and Gang Gang Dance, have informed his approach to making records; his influence is felt across the underground.

Helium chasms is the first single from my new album.

An acoustic guitar and a shaker are support for reverb-drenched vocals on this caustic song about separation. There are a few chords played on electric, as well as a synth bass buried in the mix. At the very end, a single drum kit smash is repeated and fades out over a delay pedal. It’s personal, heartbreaking, and does not pull punches.
