Rusty Santos

Artist / Producer / Mixer Rusty Santos is a musician and producer known for making avant garde music and experimental pop.

He first gained attention producing Animal Collective’s Sung Tongs and through his collaboration with Panda Bear on Person Pitch. His solo work explores subliminal territory, emerging from his nonlinear approach to music production and composition, creating inside of dreams, collaborating with new artists, and using the studio as an instrument. He invites the listener to step outside the conventional norms of song and sound. Rusty’s catalog spans epochs, having produced and mixed records for artists like Born Ruffians, Dirty Projectors, and Dawn of Midi, and mastering albums for artists like Beach House and DJ Rashad. His roots in the acoustic and electronic psychedelia scenes, including collaborations with Black Dice and Gang Gang Dance, have informed his approach to making records; his influence is felt across the underground.

A decade ago, I bought my first smartphone so I could go to Beijing to record the band for . I had been a flip-phone holdout for a reason. I knew that this device would change everything, and it did.

We visited the Forbidden City, and Shin Lu, the guitarist, took these photos of me with my new phone. I treasure these prints, bound together with a little golden twisty cord.

I was a tourist in two places that day: a visitor inside Beijing’s first ring road, but also an explorer of handheld computing. I saw that the image on the screen instantly match the picture in my mind.
