Ann Baumgartner was not supposed to become the first American woman to fly a jet. During World War II, she served with the Women Airforce Service Pilots and later worked in the Army Air Forces fighter test division. On October 14, 1944, she climbed into the Bell YP-59A Airacomet, America's experimental jet fighter. The aircraft looked unfamiliar, sounded different, and demanded a new kind of attention from its pilot. Baumgartner completed the flight and quietly opened a door that had never been opened by an American woman anywhere before. The jet was experimental. Her place in aviation history was permanent.

Nancy Harkness Love believed experienced women pilots could help move American aircraft where they were needed. In 1942, she helped create and lead the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, known as the WAFS. Love became one of the first women qualified to serve as a first pilot of the B-17 Flying Fortress, a heavy bomber many people considered too demanding for women to fly. WAFS pilots ferried aircraft between factories, training fields, and operational bases, freeing male pilots for vital combat assignments. Love did not fly one famous mission. She helped build the system that kept thousands of wartime aircraft moving.
