**What does “nationalism” actually mean?**

Nationalism is the belief that a nation’s identity, interests, and independence should be strongly protected and placed first. It can encourage people to feel united, take responsibility for their country, and work toward a shared future.

Current events have made me take a harder look at my country and wonder where it’s headed. I think passionate patriotic sentiment can be healthy. It can give people a sense of belonging and inspire them to care about their country’s future.

But that feeling becomes dangerous when it hardens into aggressive arrogance. This happens when national identity is treated as superior to every other identity, and loyalty to one’s country becomes more important than compassion, truth, or the freedom to question its direction.

America has always lived with this tension: the desire to unite around a common national identity and the ongoing disagreement over who gets included in it.
