For Greg Gallegos (), his works are an opportunity to highlight—and in some cases—enhance the figure and natural grain of the wood.

In his Delicate Caress collection, Greg references the timber's sinuous shape and the honesty of the tree's wood grain and burl. As such, each piece is refined with a raw tactile quality and should fit in any number of interior environments. Michigan woodturner Greg Gallegos is best known for using only reclaimed wood to make pieces that are fully functional to the sublime. He sees each of his creations as an opportunity to bring out the tree's natural qualities. As such, his works are raw, intensely tactile, yet refined beings.

Chawans—Japanese ceremonial tea bowls—are intensely personal forms that capture the essence of the maker’s touch in the opposing forces of art and function. For Akira Satake, these well-balanced Chawans are his life’s work, a deep and intimate articulation of his personality in tactile form.

Located in the heart of the Hida mountains, the ancient feudal city of Takayama is a time capsule teeming with craft history. With its endless forests and a bountiful supply of high-quality timber, today’s Takayama reveals a natural coexistence with the Hida woods; it is a living testament to the work of generations of legendary wood craftsmen.

Takayama is also the birthplace of Hida Sangyo, formed by local families in the 1920s. Today, the furniture company's holistic use of the cedar tree builds upon a woodworking tradition of over 1,300 years to create sustainable innovation and modern furniture.

We launched Imprint one year ago with a mission to celebrate makers and their craft. We believed then that there was a distinct opportunity to offer the choice of fewer, better things—objects that last generations, objects with stories to tell. We still do.

While a birthday milestone is cause for celebration, it is also an ideal moment for reflection.

Despite launching in a time of limited travel, it’s truly been an honor to bring you inspiring profiles of incredible artisans from around the world, and handcrafted pieces directly from their studios to our shop. We especially love seeing which one-of-a-kind items discovered on Imprint end up as cherished treasures in your homes.

We’ve enjoyed connecting with you and Imprint’s growing community that spans more than 100 countries. In fact, it is with your support that we have been able to contribute to our goal of helping our featured artisans broaden their audience and preserve traditional craftsmanship.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. We truly have a lot to be grateful for. And with that, we wish you the best this Thanksgiving season. Let’s continue to revel in the joy that comes from making and living with intention. We’re just getting started!

“Made by hand, the craft object bears the fingerprints, real or metaphorical, of the person who fashioned it. These fingerprints are not the equivalent of the artist’s signature, for they are not a name. Nor are they a mark or a brand. They are a sign: the almost invisible scar commemorating our original brotherhood or sisterhood.” — Octavio Paz

"Every decently-made object, from a house to a lamp post to a bridge, spoon or egg cup, is not just a piece of 'stuff' but a physical embodiment of human energy, testimony to the magical ability of our species to take raw materials and turn them into things of use, value and beauty." — Kevin McCloud

Potter Abigail Schama (from our film, The Wrangle) presents an exhibition of new ceramic works on the theme of listening and receptivity at this year's London Craft Week on October 8-10. These new ceramic works have been described by the author Margie Orford as ‘bound together by love and a fractured strength that gives them their fierce and vulnerable beauty’. The process starts at the wheel, then altered, slipped, sometimes bound, drawn, or engraved upon before being fired and re-fired.

"We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates […] Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty."

"I'm not a very precise potter," says London-based ceramicist Abigail Schama.

She doesn’t make perfect, reproducible things. Instead, Abigail follows the imperfect and irreproducible—like people, no two forms she creates are the same. Some may call themselves sisters—perhaps they are born of the same firing or clay, or share a similar slight tilt or sheen—but each boasts its own rich character and self, Abigail’s firm touch and coaxing so evident in each form.

“There are only a few clays that become beautiful after firing. Bizen clay is one of them,” says potter Jumpei Kaneshige. “I’m studying how to let special effects happen as I wish. It’s what we call happy accidents in the kiln. That is the most interesting part of the firing.”

The opening of the kiln is a moment that, for some potters, even after lifetimes of practice, is not any less fraught. Kaneshige says, “Loading is full of hope. Unloading is a lot of anxiety.”

The entire process is unpredictable and in many ways, a leap of faith—potters take the clay as far as they can, then cede their trust back to the elements.

This traditional teapot from Jumpei Kaneshige's collection is man, earth, and fire embodied.

The organic markings on the piece are created with the hidasuki (緋襷) technique, which emphasizes the natural colors and textures of the clay. A common Bizen technique, the pottery is wrapped in bunches of rice straw prior to firing, then placed in a saggar, which protects the piece from direct contact with the flames and ashes. When the straw burns away, it reveals calligraphic reddish streaks on the surface. Jumpei often pounds the rice straw with a mallet for a more softer, more muted effect. Each piece is hand-formed and fired with red pine logs from the Okayama region for 14 days.
