This weekend we stayed at the house I grew up in. My youngest was in a hockey tournament halfway between mine and my dad and mom’s house. This stove has been working for 40+ years. Many a Christmas stocking had been hung on the mantle.

We bought the house with knotty pine behind but insurance made us remove it and put this up. (This is an old picture we have since put new flooring in and much more, I will add an updated pic soon)
However - my fiancé cannot stand this fireproof board or whatever it is.
What is the absolute cheapest, most frugal way to make this look better?
Will probably hire someone and add stone in the coming years but would like to do something until then.

This is our rather awesome napoleon, about 11 years old now. I enjoy keeping the glass clean so the fire can be seen clearly. Question, how do I get rid of the really attached grime? Any cleaning solutions or tools you’d recommend?

I sure am thankful for this wood stove today and for the next week! Good old Canadian winters 🥶 but the house stays toasty warm without the furnace turning on.
