Happy Pride Month to All!
As we take this month to celebrate and uplift the LGBTQIA community, let’s continue to reflect and improve upon practicing love and acceptance.

American pop artist Keith Haring’s prolific artwork comes to mind. His work placed a heavy emphasis on advocating for safe s*x and AIDS awareness.

Haring used this art to depict many social and political issues prevalent in the 1970s and 80s. He worked closely with the Heritage of Pride organization in New York, which has hosted Pride events in the city commemorating the Stonewall Riots of 1969 every year.

Prior to his death in 1990, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, which provides funding and grants to non-profit organizations to educating youths and the public about HIV and AIDS. The foundation also supports the arts and educational pursuits by funding exhibitions and additional programs.

Let’s continue on building upon this incredible legacy!

On this International Women’s Day (and Women’s History Month), we celebrate Ms. Adichie and her call for freedom of the individual as they see fit. We know there is unity in diversity, and that each life is wild and precious. This March, we celebrate all those who remind us of this truth.

We couldn’t let come to a close without recognizing Nia DaCosta! At just 33 years of age, she is on the fast track to becoming one of Hollywood’s illustrious young filmmakers.

Brooklyn born and Harlem raised, Nia DaCosta had early aspirations to become a poet, but became obsessed with films after seeing “Apocalypse Now.”

She met her primary film influence, Martin Scorsese while studying at his alma mater, New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

Upon graduation, she not only landed a job as a production assistant working with Scorsese, she also worked with Steve McQueen and Steven Soderbergh.

After completing her film studies, DaCosta wrote “Little Woods,” which was chosen for the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs in 2015. She would go on to film a feature length film of the same script and be awarded the Nora Ephron Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018.

While DaCosta was directing two episodes of the third season of “Top Boy,” she found out she was shortlisted to direct Jordan Peele’s remake of “Candyman.” This marked her official film debut, and also made her the first African-American female director to debut at the top of the box office.

We are incredibly excited about DaCosta’s latest endeavor, directing the upcoming Marvel Studios film, “The Marvels,” which is the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” The film is due to be released this summer, marking it the first Marvel film directed by an African American female filmmaker.

We are so blown away by her many accomplishments in such a short time period, and hope everyone has had a great month reflecting upon and experiencing the many examples of Black Excellence.
