After returning from the cemetery, where I’d left flowers for my wife who passed in a plane crash over twenty years ago, my partner called.

Him: "Our new employee from Germany lands in a few hours. Could you meet her at the airport?"
Me: "Sure."

Elsa arrived, and we made our way to the office. Later, the whole team gathered for lunch. Elsa’s energy and sense of humor lit up the table. We talked non-stop—it was unusual to find someone so similar in humor, especially with mine being rather quirky. It wasn’t anything romantic, given our 23-year age difference; that simply isn’t on the table for me.

Over several months, Elsa became not just an excellent coworker but also a close friend. Eventually, her mother Elke came to visit from Germany, and one evening, we all dined together. As Elsa went to the bathroom, I found myself alone with Elke, who suddenly clasped my shoulder.

Her: "Don't you dare eye my daughter."
Me: "Excuse me?!"
