The Story of an Iconic Dress

Virginie Gautreau wore a black gown designed by the Parisian couturier Félix in John Singer Sargent's painting "Madame X." Its simplified, daring cut—with a plunging neckline and slender straps—was scandalous at the time for its boldness, and it may have been custom-made for Gautreau. The iconic dress in the painting later inspired other designers. In 1960, Cuban-American fashion designer Luis Estevez created a low-cut black crepe evening dress inspired by "Madame X." Dina Merrill wore the Estevez dress in Life Magazine in January 1960, photographed by Milton Green.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel introduced the Chanel jacket in 1954 to liberate women from the restrictive, wasp-waisted silhouette of the 1950s. She was 71 years old at the time, and the jacket’s design was inspired by men’s suits.

No Sleep for Mother, or How Jane Got her Party Dress.
Girl's Patchwork Party Dress.
This dress was made for a little girl called Jane by her mother, Elizabeth in 1944 after an unexpected invitation to a children’s party. By this stage of the Second World War, parties were unusual as there were significant food shortages and many children had been separated from family and friends after being evacuated. In addition, a new party dress would have been difficult to obtain as clothing was rationed and cost money as well as precious coupons.
The night before the party Jane’s mother collected every spare scrap of fabric she could find and in the morning Jane’s patchwork party dress was ready.
Seems almost impossible, but if the child went to bed early as they did back then and the mother was clearly a talented dress maker then I believe in 12 or 20 hours this beautiful little dress could be made, perhaps a few tweaks in the morning or in the afternoon before going to the party. 🙂
Girl's frock of mulicoloured patchwork in silks (including patachute silk) and cottons, the dress has a squared neckline with an organdie frill, and padded puffed sleeves are lined, and the gathered skirt had a built-in organdie petticoat with a hem frill. The dress fastens at the back with five pearlised buttons.
