When audiences first met E.T. in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, few realized that the lovable alien was brought to life by a team of talented performers. Among them was 12-year-old Matthew DeMeritt, a boy born without legs who played a crucial role in making the character move.
DeMeritt was one of three actors who wore the E.T. suit, along with Pat Bilon and Tamara De Treaux. Because both Bilon and De Treaux had brittle bones, Matthew was chosen for any scenes that required E.T. to fall or hit the ground. To make this possible, the production team designed a special suit that allowed him to walk on his hands inside the costume, giving the alien its distinctive, awkward-yet-endearing movements.
Now 55 years old, DeMeritt continues to share his story at fan conventions, where he meets movie lovers, takes photos, and answers questions about his unique experience working on one of cinema’s most iconic films.
