The Love Story Behind The Vances — It Started With A Class Assignment. ❤️
Before Air Force Two. Before the Senate. Before four kids and a house on Observatory Circle.
There were two law students at Yale in 2013 who didn’t belong.
JD was the kid from Middletown, Ohio — hillbilly family, Marine, first in his family to go to law school. He felt foreign in those Ivy League halls.
Usha was the daughter of Indian immigrants — Yale undergrad, Cambridge master, Gates Scholar, the smartest person in every room, quiet, brilliant.
They got paired as writing partners for a class assignment. A discussion group about “social decline in white America.”
JD was supposed to focus on the paper. He couldn’t. He fell hard.
Years later he wrote in Hillbilly Elegy: “In a place that always seemed a little foreign, Usha’s presence made me feel at home.”
In a school full of debate, Usha didn’t try to fix him. She understood questions he didn’t know to ask. She pushed him to apply for opportunities he didn’t think he deserved.
They graduated in 2013. Married in 2014. No big wedding story. Just two kids who found home in each other.
Today, 11 years later — Ewan 8, Vivek 5, Mirabel 4 in pink bows, and baby Alec Neel 2 months old — she still is.
When he walked off Air Force Two in Iowa on Friday, his phone had one text: Usha asking if Mirabel put his phone on the shelf yet.
When he was asked on Lara Trump’s show Saturday night about 2028, he said, “If we do a good job in 2025 and 2026…” — and looked off camera where Usha was standing.
She clerked for Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts. She left her big law firm when he was picked for VP. She never wanted the spotlight.
In a recent Fox News interview she just said, “I believe in JD, and I really love him, and so we’ll just sort of…”
She didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t need to.
Because after 11 years, four kids, a Senate, a vice presidency, and a house that is never quiet, the assignment is still the same.
She still makes a foreign place feel like home.
