Cities are never just collections of buildings. They are shaped by labor, memory, transportation, housing, surveillance, and the people who move through them every day.

In Tommy Mulitin and the City as Contested Terrain, Tommy photographs Boston as a living archive of competing histories, where public space becomes a record of power, resilience, and everyday life. Rather than documenting the city as a destination, this photo essay asks us to consider how urban spaces reveal the social, political, and cultural forces that shape them.

Earlier this year, Tommy also presented The City as Contested Terrain during the Pasadena Photography Arts Open Show, “When the Students Become the Teachers,” at the Inglewood Photo Festival 2026, where he shared the ideas and process behind the project with festival attendees.

Blending surrealism, symbolism, and meticulous production, his photographs challenge perception while remaining deeply human. In Naar (2), he discusses his creative process, the ideas behind his imagery, and the philosophy that has shaped one of contemporary photography’s most recognizable visual languages.

A towering figure in American documentary photography, Dr. Ernest C. Withers Sr. used his camera to preserve some of the most significant moments of the Civil Rights Movement. His archive is housed at the Withers Collection Museum & Gallery in Memphis, while his photographs are held by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Library of Congress. Naar (2) revisits the enduring impact of his remarkable body of work.

Ellen Friedlander explores the possibilities of digital pinhole photography, transforming ordinary scenes into poetic, dreamlike images. In her interview, she discusses how this unconventional process slows down seeing, embraces imperfection, and creates photographs that blur the line between reality and memory.
