Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a Washington Democrat representing the state’s 3rd Congressional District, is pushing a proposal that would require members of Congress to undergo cognitive fitness evaluations to determine whether they can still perform their duties without significant, irreversible cognitive impairment. 🧠⚖️

The two-term congresswoman, first elected in 2022 in a district Donald Trump carried twice, says the idea comes directly from concerns she has heard from voters about the increasingly advanced age of some members of Congress. 👵👨‍🦳

“What I’ve heard from my neighbors, my community is this idea that this place is being run by a bunch of staffers,” Perez told Axios. She added, “we’re seeing a very real decline in confidence in Congress.” 📉
