A triumph of craft and a love letter to the art of storytelling, Kelsey Taylor’s To Kill a Wolf leverages subtlety and nuance to build its emotional, character-centric narrative.

After its celebrated debut at the Edinburgh Film Festival, To Kill a Wolf screened across the world, garnering a a host of prestigious accolades, from Best Directing at the Bend Film Festival, Stubbornly Independent at the Tallgrass Film Festival, and Best Film at Film Fest Knox.

This August, To Kill a Wolf will dance across the silver screen, awarded a theatrical run. Though there is a syzygy between Taylor’s sophisticated cinematic retelling and the forthright symbolic language of the folktale, both stories are distilled with a powerful warning.

To Kill a Wolf unsheaths the parable of predation from the whimsical fantasy elements, crafting a film that brews tension with masterful patience. This story is profoundly emotional, and yet, in its slow burn storytelling and simmering narrative tension, it earns the potent emotion that bubbles to the surface.

A casket split suddenly. A flower vase turned urgent drinking vessel. The knowing wink of turquoise gloves. The imagery of this filmic descent into the bizarre and otherworldly weaves together to craft a visceral vision of the supernatural.

Feel an eerie mood seep into your very marrow as you watch the chilling performance of this film’s undead heroine, haunting us with an unsettling stare and contorting her body in an uncanny choreomania.

Written, directed, and composed by Nicolás Uboldi, this cinematic ghost story is told in a visual language enchanted by the nostalgic beauty of vintage textures and the moody ambience of bold hues swathed in dim light. This vivid visual poem appeals to all our senses–the cracking rip of wood scratches our ears, we feel the sweltering heat that pools in the room upon our sweat-glistened skin, we smell death’s rank perfume as it tangles with the scent of white funeral bouquets. \

Weaving photos, footage, and captured conversations, Femi Ladi's ”Canvas” crafts a dynamic, cinematic visual language for this filmic look into Riley's body art.

Many of the pieces that adorn his body have great significance to him, especially on his left side. “I feel like this whole side is representing me and my family,” said Riley. “I’m always trying to make sure that the heritage is included in the art placed on my skin."

A unique dynamic on full display, we see the connection between Riley and his artist Justine in interviews. “The storytelling element to a tattoo is so important. I always tell people, know your theme or the story of your tattoo before we go into it,” Justine says.

This short documentary is especially visually engaging because there is a story laced into how each interview is shot, always within the context of Riley's life–whether in the ring, in the tattoo parlor chair, or walking down the city streets with a friend.

As this film exhibits the metaphorical iconography that swirls across Riley's skin, it crafts a lyrical visual language to augment the discussion of symbolic meaning.
