Condé Nast Expands OTT Offerings With Wired, Bon Appétit and GQ Channels

Condé Nast boasted 12 billion digital video views last year. The company announced 35 returning series and 60 new pilots under development for this year.

Over the top (OTT) is a media distribution practice that allows a streaming content provider to sell audio, video, and other media services directly to the consumer over the internet via streaming media as a standalone product, bypassing telecommunications, cable or broadcast television service providers that traditionally act as a controller or distributor of such content.

The new offerings will be available on AppleTV, Roku and Amazon Fire.

"To some degree, the public response is irrelevant. Nance found a perch at HBO, a premium network with a growing streaming service and wide international reach. Yes, it has a midnight broadcast slot (although that’s increasingly less relevant with the rise of HBO Go), which indicates HBO knows it’s for a niche audience. Still, that seems like a lesser barrier; a black content creator produced work that isn’t easily accessible for a mainstream platform. That’s an achievement in itself.

What Made Black Panther A Super Awesome Film Campaign?

⚡Large chunks of the campaign — from earned media to the trailers — emphasized the soundtrack produced and curated by Kendrick Lamar. His music was all over the push and helped reach the target audience in a real and powerful way.

⚡The film was positioned even more as coming from director Ryan Coogler than from Marvel Studios. Coogler was front and center throughout the publicity campaign, talking to the press about the story and what it meant to helm the first Marvel or DC movie featuring a black hero and cast.

⚡It was evident that the movie’s enormous success profoundly influenced the last few months of the campaign for Infinity War. Suddenly that film’s marketing featured a lot more scenes in Wakanda and included a lot more focus on T’Challa and the other characters.

Disney and Marvel's blockbuster superhero pic Black Panther grossed $647 million overseas, while Hidden Figures and Straight Outta Compton also did solid business overseas.

But even in the post-Black Panther era, foreign distributors can still be reluctant to book U.S. films with a black cast.

Moonlight, which, buoyed in part by its Oscar win, grossed $37 million overseas, or more than half of its total gross.

We are in the news discussing a case for global Black film distribution and the hole we are filling in the industry at Flourishing Films.

"The challenge is even greater for indies without a studio’s backing. “Many of these films were being made, but not being seen by buyers at large,” Efuru Flowers said. She believed that black films would sell in the global marketplace if there was more representation in the sales sphere, and worked towards filling this hole in the marketplace by starting her own sales agency, Flourishing Films, which focuses on representing black and diverse content."

In the case of Finland’s The Unknown Soldier, the filmmakers worked with Helsinki-based Hasan & Partners to develop a new way to work with brands, which helped augment additional, more traditional funding and grants. Where this was most useful was both in the creation of the film and its marketing, with well-known Finnish brands doing most of the heavy lifting. Instead of producers or studios footing the full bill, it was the brands that helped market the movie throughout the filmmaking process.
