It was one of the first British Asian dancefloor records but poor distribution led to it vanishing for decades. Now, with a rerelease imminent, the original synth-folk sound of Kuljit Bhamra and his mother Mohinder is finally getting its due

ANNOUNCEMENT! We are delighted to announce the release of an astonishing lost “holy grail”, Mohinder Kaur Bhamra’s 1982 masterpiece ‘Punjabi Disco’. The reissue includes remixes by Peaking Lights, Danger Boys, Psychemagik, Dexter+Franz, Mystic Jungle, and Baalti, as well as a cover by Say She She’s Piya Malik and Turbotito & Ragz. It’s available for preorder and out on x2LP vinyl and digital on October 31. Swipe for clips!

Unknown and inaccessible to even the deepest of diggers, ‘Punjabi Disco’ is the first-ever British Asian electronic dance album recorded and a true lost relic. Released the same year and into equal obscurity as ‘Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat’, Charanjit Singh’s acid house opus, it is set to have similar reverberations in the world of dance music. Produced by Mohinder’s eldest son and bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra using a Roland SH-1000 synthesiser and a CR-8000 drum machine played by his then 11-year-old brother, the concept for the album was subsequently stolen by the very music label that agreed to distribute it. Self-released with no label support, ‘Punjabi Disco’ vanished into history.

A chance find of the original multitrack masters during the Covid lockdown and a tip off on the record’s existence from our dear friend Massimo di Lena of led to this reissue. Lovingly mixed down and remastered from the studio recordings, the release also includes a newly discovered track.

West London-based vocalist and first-generation immigrant Mohinder became the first woman to sing at Punjabi community events and weddings in the UK. These events were traditionally a tame, segregated affair: men and women seated on opposite sides of the room. Born out of a desire to desegregate the dancefloor, the sound of ‘Punjabi Disco’ is as mesmerising as it is undefinable – parts disco, funk, acid house, and Punjabi folk.

Pre-orders encouraged! 🔗

A heartfelt thank you to Mohinder ji and Kuljit for entrusting us with this reissue ❤️

ANNOUNCEMENT! Four years since its release and long out of print, ‘Naya Beat Volume 1: South Asian Dance and Electronic Music 1983-1992’ will finally be available again as a Record Store Day Essentials exclusive! It’s available now for preorder (STRONGLY encouraged) and out on September 26, 2025. Hit up our bio!

A storied and reference release for hidden electronic and dance music from the overlooked ‘80s and ‘90s South Asian music scene, Volume 1 now fetches well over $100 on Discogs. We’ve been hard at work to give it the repress it deserves – a stunning x2LP gatefold package housing sky blue and red coloured translucent 180-gram eco-friendly records. And if that isn’t enough, our recent follow up to Volume 1, ‘Naya Beat Volume 2: South Asian Dance and Electronic Music 1988-1994’, is also being repressed. Soon to be out of print, it’s getting a similar RSD Essentials makeover (swipe 👈🏽) and will be released at the same time as Volume 1.

We are incredibly excited to be working with our very talented friends on making these represses available as truly revolutionary eco-friendly records. There are not your questionable-sounding recycled PVC/vinyl but efficiently produced high-fidelity records, made from PET that are 100% recyclable, providing the first real step change for record manufacturing in the last 50 years. These records are indistinguishable from traditional vinyl in sound, look, and feel.

It’s hard for us to fully grasp the impact both Volume 1 and 2 have had. The Vinyl Factory’s number one reissues of 2021 and 2024 respectively, they have collectively been critics’ favourites with the likes of Pitchfork, DJ Mag, Mixmag, 4Columns, Phonica Records, Juno, KCRW, Aquarium Drunkard, and In Sheep’s Clothing just to name a few. If you haven’t copped either volume this is your chance! ❤

OUT NOW! Legendary French producer Black Devil Disco Club transforms our Queen Asha Puthli’s ‘Our Love Is Making Me Sing’ into a scintillating dark and brooding cosmic groover. A mouthwatering collaboration, this is the lead single from our forthcoming EP ‘Naya Beat Select Remixes and Reworks’ out on June 6, 2025.

Taken off ‘The Devil Is Loose’, jazz royalty and disco icon Asha Puthli’s third and iconic album, ‘Our Love Is Making Me Sing’ is a fast-paced funky dance classic. A cult figure in dance and electronic music circles known for his pioneering eponymous 1978 album, legendary French producer Bernard Fevre aka Black Devil Disco Club transforms the track into a scintillating dark and brooding cosmic groover, destined for those late club nights. Originally intended for Asha’s 2023 ‘Disco Mystic: Select Remixes Volume 1’ we simply ran out of space on the record. It’s now finally getting the release it deserves!

OUT NOW! Turbotito & Ragz rescue The Jets Orkhestra’s house anthem ‘X-290’ from obscurity and ready this lost classic for the modern dance floor. This is the third and last single from ‘Naya Beat Volume 2’ uncovering future classics from an overlooked era of South Asian house, street soul, and downtempo released between 1988 and 1994.

The Jets Orkhestra were a pioneering dance music project from Harrow, London. The brainchild of British Asian producer Pankaj “Jets” Jethwa, they released three EPs between 1990-92, now all highly sought after by selectors. A true visionary and innovator of the British Asian underground, Pankaj Jethwa was one of the first South Asian DJs in the UK and an early adopter of electronic music production. He built his own fully fledged home recording studio, Garage Groove Studios, which became a home for many of the early British Asian electronic music innovators. The Jets Orkhestra was built around the production work of Jethwa, rapper Val Dubois (aka M.C.V) and two female vocalists – Bindu Sri who sang on the EP ‘Aaja Re Aaja’ (1990) and Bharti, who sang on the EP ‘Tum Mera Pyar Ho’ (1992). The group’s first release, a cover of Giorgio Moroder’s Chase, did so well that Jethwa used the royalties to bankroll his label Garage Groove Recording Corporation – a decision he made after getting turned down by the UK’s biggest bhangra labels who couldn’t figure out how to market a Black rapper performing with an Asian female vocalist. The B-side from their first EP, the underground classic ‘Aaja Re Aaja’, ‘X-290’ is a lost house anthem featuring soaring vamps, jazzy keyboard lines, and rousing computer vocals (inspired by the menacing supercomputer from the movie ‘WarGames’). Filip Nikolic (aka Turbotito) & Raghav Mani (aka Ragz) sprinkle a bit of magic on the original, working in cosmic-tinged arpeggiated synths, unreleased instrumentals, and beefed up drums to arm this classic with some extra oomph. 🤖⚡️

Massive thanks to Apple Music for already featuring ‘X-290’ on its editorial playlist and to Juno Download for the support on its homepage and Disco/Nu Disco/Re-Edits page!
