Do Betta Fish Need Catappa Leaves?

Based on the experience of many betta breeders in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, Catappa leaves are most commonly used for:
Fry (young bettas) and breeding pairs during spawning.
Newly imported or recently shipped fish.
Fish recovering from stress, minor injuries, or illness.
For everyday care, however, many professional breeders do not use Catappa leaves all the time. Instead, they prioritize stable water quality, high-quality nutrition, and regular water changes, as these factors have a much greater impact on a betta's long-term health than the use of Catappa leaves alone.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Avoid using too many leaves, as the water can become overly dark and water quality may decline once the leaves start decomposing.
Regular water changes are still essential. Catappa leaves are not a substitute for good tank maintenance.
If your betta is healthy, active, and living in clean, stable water, it can thrive perfectly well without Catappa leaves.
