I never married or danced with another man after my high school sweetheart disappeared on prom night in 1985—last week, a little girl handed me his prom boutonniere.
The last time I danced was on my senior prom night in 1985.
I was seventeen.
Michael was eighteen.
Everyone at school assumed we'd get married someday. We'd been together since sophomore year, survived awkward first dates, college applications, and all the teasing about being an "odd, mismatched couple."
On prom night, we were crowned king and queen.
When the band played the final slow song, Michael held me so tightly that I remember joking, "If you don't let go, we'll miss graduation."
He laughed.
"I've waited three years to dance with you like this. Five more minutes won't hurt."
After the dance, we posed for pictures with our crowns, laughing so hard that my mascara ran. Then Michael kissed my forehead and said, "Don't move. I left something in my truck. I'll be back in five minutes."
I watched him jog across the parking lot.
Before getting into his pickup, he turned around, grinned, and waved.
It was the last time anyone ever saw him.
His truck was found three days later on an empty country road nearly forty miles away.
The keys were still in the ignition.
Inside lay his tuxedo jacket he'd worn all evening. Only the white rose boutonniere was missing.
There was no sign of Michael.
No ransom note.
No blood.
No explanation.
After two years, he was declared legally dead.
Part of me was buried with him.
I never married.
I never danced with another man.
Instead, I spent the next forty years working in the elementary school cafeteria, feeding children who reminded me of the family I'd once dreamed of having.
Every spring, when prom season arrived, I opened the same wooden box and looked at my prom wrist corsage—the matching flowers we'd promised to keep forever.
Last Thursday, while serving mashed potatoes during lunch, a little blonde girl stepped out of the line and smiled at me.
"Excuse me," she whispered.
She couldn't have been older than eight.
Golden curls framed her face.
Deep dimples appeared in both cheeks when she smiled.
And there was a tiny cleft in her chin.
Without another word, she placed an old white rose boutonniere into my trembling hands.
It matched my corsage perfectly.
Then she looked straight into my eyes and quietly said,
"It must be with you."
She skipped back toward the lunch line.
My hands trembled as I noticed a yellowed note tied beneath the ribbon.
I unfolded it.
The very first sentence read:
"It finally found its way back."
But the next line made me collapse onto the cafeteria floor. ⬇️
