There is a story in Lithuanian folklore about a man who wagers with the Devil: stay awake three nights in the forest, and all the riches are his. On the brink of sleep, he bets again—that there are more crooked trees than straight. While the Devil counts, the man rests. He wakes, victorious.

Josephine's Waltz

"Josephine's Waltz" relates a pattern from traditional Islamic art, with colors inspired by rays of light peeking through a tree canopy in Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in Los Angeles, California. The title of the piece is borrowed from a traditional Irish instrumental tune.

Find this work, “Where Waits the Nuckelavee” and more in my gallery.

The Nuckelavee is one of the darkest figures in Orcadian (Orkney Islands, Scotland) folklore. Half horse and half rider, the creature has no skin and is a raw, writhing mass of muscle and sinew. It emerges from the sea, usually at night, meeting unsuspecting travelers near the shore, marshes, or moors. Its presence is sudden and terrifying: you realize it is there only when it is already upon you.

A little glimpse into the day-to-day ✨
First pic is my studio mid-flow while working on pieces from my Lore and Legend series. Paints everywhere, canvases drying, and that in-between stage where the work feels alive and the studio hums with it.

These works were finished a few weeks ago, right before I shifted into a new project in my Point of Origin series—a much tidier process (pic #2!)

I love how each series shapes not just the work, but the space around it.

August always feels like the time to squeeze in those last summer moments and soak up what's left.

Even if you're not rushing to beach weekends anymore, the energy of this season can be contagious. There is a sense of peace in enjoying an ending while mentally preparing for a new beginning.

And... it feels like a great time to refresh your space with artwork, if I may say so.

Today's artwork is called, “Djinn to the Woods.”

Djinn are supernatural beings with origins in Middle Eastern mythology. They are often depicted as powerful, shape-shifting entities that inhabit the natural world. While they are more commonly associated with arid landscapes like deserts, some variations of djinn lore extend their presence to wooded areas. In these interpretations, the djinn may be believed to reside within ancient trees or hidden groves, where they exert influence over humans and the natural elements.
