I took care of my mother-in-law, who was bedridden, and when she passed away, she left her entire inheritance to her daughter
Five years ago, on the cusp of adult life, I'd freshly emerged from college, still green and hopeful, yet suddenly thrust into the world of work as a physical therapist at a bustling general hospital. I was merely a girl in my twenties then, and with the looming specter of a demanding career, I foresaw little time for exploration, for life's grand adventures.
In a spur of serendipity, I decided to gift myself a four-day sojourn to the paradise that is Hawaii, a solitary pilgrimage before embracing my destined path. Alone and financially prudent, I sought shelter at an affordable guest house through Airbnb, highly praised and welcoming. It was there, in that unlikely place, fate introduced me to the man who'd eventually be my husband.
The guest house was a melting pot of transient souls, a motley crew of enthusiastic adventurers. It hummed with the electricity of burgeoning connections, of shared stories and laughter. Yet, I, the introvert, found solace in my solitary corner, my only companion the occasional drink.
Among the crowd, his eyes met mine, a man, solitary like me. They were big, kind, brimming with an innocence reminiscent of a gentle cow. My heart fluttered with an unspoken connection, a bond that swiftly manifested into hours of shared conversation and a friendship that felt as old as time itself.
As we talked, a whimsical thought danced across my mind - could this man, this stranger, be the one I'd wish to spend my life with? My heart was lighter, my spirits higher as I returned to my room, only to be met by the curious glances of my co-residents.
Their innocent probing left me flustered, vehemently denying my burgeoning feelings for the man. Yet, amidst their giggles, they teased me with a tarot reading, the cards laid before me, portending my destiny. To my denial, my hands moved instinctively, choosing three cards that painted a picture of a future I hadn't dared to consider. A future, it seemed, riddled with thorns should I choose to journey with him. A sigh escaped my lips, my heart unaccountably heavy at this divination.
What followed was a whirlwind romance, our love story blossoming into marriage, a path that indeed proved as thorny as the tarot cards had warned. My humble beginnings and chosen career drew the disdain of my wealthy mother-in-law, her expectations not in alignment with the reality of my life.
But amidst the pricking thorns, I found an unlikely solace in my sister-in-law. Charming, loving, and eternally stylish, she was the younger sister I had yearned for in my own family of gruff brothers. Her life was a stark contrast to my own - a life of comfort, of ease, yet of a dependency that I admired but could never emulate.
Her ability to voice her needs, to live without hesitation, was something I envied. I longed for the ease of her life, her ability to ask and receive, and yet I knew the path I tread was my own. Married life had begun, its road stretching ahead, its path thorny, yet undeniably mine.
My trials and tribulations truly started when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. As a physical therapist, I had witnessed firsthand the debilitating nature of the disease, its relentless progression crippling the human body, rendering the movements sluggish and the hands rigid. It was a relentless foe, offering a future shrouded in the foreboding specter of paralysis and dependency.
The news shattered the family, casting a pallor of despair over our home. My husband, the dutiful son, was particularly struck, his sorrow driving him to seek solace in a previously untouched vice – ci******es. Seeing him so, I felt an urge, a need to extend my hand, to help alleviate the pain.
I suggested my mother-in-law receive treatment at my hospital, its proximity to our home an added convenience. Each day I put my heart and soul into the rehabilitative treatments, my hands working tirelessly to soothe her stiff body. Yet, even with my dedicated care, she remained taciturn, her silence stinging more than the harshest of words.
One day, we found ourselves gathered to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday. After the festivities, my sister-in-law requested my professional assistance, claiming she had sprained her back. Despite the exhausting day, I couldn't refuse her first-ever request. I applied my expertise, seeking to alleviate her discomfort.
It was during my rest when I saw it – a message not intended for my eyes. Its content was a brutal, cruel jab, likening me to a mere masseuse because of my physique and questioning my husband's judgment for choosing me. The words were a blade, cutting deep and reigniting the festering hurt I had tried so hard to stifle.
My sister-in-law's hasty retraction and excuses did little to quell my rising anger. In front of the family, I vented my frustrations, asserting my professional status against her belittling view. My tirade, however, was interrupted by a startling sight - my mother-in-law's flushed face.
I braced myself for the impending onslaught, expecting her to defend her daughter. Instead, a slap echoed in the room, landing on my sister-in-law's cheek, leaving us all in stunned silence. My mother-in-law, her voice low yet resolute, voiced her long-held gratitude towards me, surprising us all. Her words, a solemn command to my sister-in-law, were a poignant acknowledgment of my dedication and hard work. The tides had turned, and the journey seemed a little less thorny, a little more bearable.
The drama in our home escalated when my mother-in-law confronted my sister-in-law with stern reprimands. She expressed her gratitude towards me for my relentless support, apologizing for her daughter's poor manners. Her unexpected reaction soothed the emotional wounds that had been inflicted upon me, and yet, her insistence on reducing my care for her left me worried.
Despite hiring a caregiver for the weekdays, the weekends were left for my husband and his sister to take turns caring for our mother. The day my sister-in-law was tasked with the responsibility, disaster struck. She was negligent, entranced by music in her earphones, while our mother-in-law fell and sustained serious injuries. This accident was a devastating blow to us, leaving me furious at her inability to provide the necessary care.
Her audacity did not end there. In a fit of rage, she blamed me for her moment of clumsiness when she banged her forehead against a door, insisting I should take full responsibility for their mother. Such nonsense, and yet, I withheld the news from my mother-in-law, fearing it would upset her more.
As I watched her health deteriorate, memories of my own mother's battle with cancer came flooding back. I was young and helpless then, and the regret of not being able to do more still haunted me. I decided I would not let history repeat itself. I discussed it with my husband, and we decided that I would quit my job to provide full-time care for our mother-in-law.
Although she initially resisted, we managed to persuade her. Her condition was worsening, her movements restricted, and her once vibrant personality fading away. I dedicated my days to assist her in her daily activities, providing the needed medical attention and companionship. Meanwhile, my sister-in-law remained absent, leading a carefree life and ignoring her responsibilities.
As the years passed, the neighborhood began to see me as my mother-in-law's real daughter and my sister-in-law as the daughter-in-law, a testament to our respective commitments. My determination to care for my mother-in-law stemmed from my lingering regret over my inability to care for my biological mother. I decided to pour all my efforts into ensuring my mother-in-law's remaining time was comfortable and meaningful.
Then, unexpectedly, a stranger appeared at our door - my mother-in-law's estranged younger sister who lived in England. She had heard of her sister's illness and had rushed back home, bringing a glimmer of familial warmth with her. However, her return was brief, as not long after, my mother-in-law peacefully passed away surrounded by her loved ones.
My sister-in-law's dramatic appearance at the funeral was starkly juxtaposed with her carefree demeanor during the meal. Her actions were a painful reminder of her indifference towards her mother's struggle. The loss of my mother-in-law left me overwhelmed with sadness, my heart filled with regret for the time we could no longer share.
The days following my mother-in-law's funeral were a blur of grief, hunger, and exhaustion. I watched my sister-in-law feast with gusto at the funeral, in stark contrast to my own muted appetite, and I was left speechless.
In an attempt to find solace, I went to organize my mother-in-law's belongings, only to be met with resistance by my sister-in-law. She insisted on doing it herself, suggesting I go home and rest. Her odd behavior seemed somewhat more conscientious, yet it was revealed that she was merely interested in retrieving our mother's savings book.
To learn of her ulterior motives was deeply unsettling, raising questions about the sincerity of her earlier remorse. Despite the shock, I rationalized that a mother's love for her child, however misguided, could offer her some peace in her final moments.
I was taken aback when I received a call from her, accusing me of stealing her inheritance. The absurdity of her claims left me stunned. As if that wasn't enough, the next day, my mother-in-law's younger sister arrived at our house with news that would completely change my perspective.
She told me that my mother-in-law had deliberately left the bank account empty, expecting her daughter's greed. To my astonishment, she handed me several bank books, explaining that my mother-in-law had entrusted them to her to pass on to me. She trusted me, believing her husband would just hand them over to their irresponsible daughter.
Reading the letter my mother-in-law had left behind was like reopening a wound that was slowly beginning to heal. Her words, full of gratitude and regret, left me feeling both humbled and heartbroken. She had not only seen me as her daughter but also placed her trust and hope in me. This realization filled me with an overwhelming mix of sadness, gratitude, and regret for ever misunderstanding her intentions.
However, the saga of my sister-in-law was far from over. Even after her mother's passing and her father's estrangement, she continued to pester my husband for money, playing on his empathetic nature. With a heavy heart, I put a stop to this. I took my husband's phone and sent her a text message, laying bare the harsh reality that she had ignored for so long. It was time for her to face her shortcomings and grow up. For our mother's sake, and for ours, she needed to learn how to stand on her own feet.
My confrontational text to my sister-in-law was a mixture of relief and remorse. I opened up about the empty bank account that her mother had left her, expressing my hope that this reality check would help her get her life back on track. After our interaction, my husband finally decided to stop providing for his sister, a decision which came with its own set of repercussions.
Her online shopping business, which had been barely surviving, finally collapsed. She was forced to leave her apartment and start working a patchwork of jobs to make ends meet. Despite all this, she still didn't visit her mother's grave, not even once. She neglected her mother's memorial day and only reached out to her father when she needed money. It was beyond frustrating and deeply sad to imagine how heartbroken my mother-in-law would be, seeing her daughter's behaviour from up above.
It's possible she may understand the weight of parenthood when she herself becomes a mother. Only then might she feel the prickling regret and belated gratitude that often accompany the challenging journey of raising a child.
Looking back, the tarot card prediction about the 'thorny path and vineyard' eerily mirrored reality. My mother-in-law had left me money from selling her vineyards. I deeply regret not getting the contact information of the tarot card reader, who seemed to have an uncanny psychic ability.
A portion of the money left by my mother-in-law was donated to people suffering from Parkinson's disease in her name. The afterlife remains a mystery to us, but in her memory, I wish to believe that our good deeds might guide her to a better place.
"Mother, rest assured that I will take good care of my husband and father-in-law as long as I live. I hope you are free from suffering, that you never stumble or fall, and that you're in good health wherever you are. I hope you are happy. Thank you for listening to my story. I wish everyone good health and a lovely day. Please support me and share your wisdom in the comments section. A 'like' and a subscription would also be greatly appreciated."
