Before becoming an actor, he worked as a rodeo performer and horse wrangler, which led to his entry into the film industry when Howard Hughes hired him to deliver horses for The Outlaw (1943). His riding skills impressed filmmakers, and he soon found work as a stuntman and extra in Westerns.

Johnson’s breakthrough came when he began working with director John Ford, who cast him in films such as She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Wagon Master (1950), and Rio Grande (1950). His natural screen presence and authentic cowboy skills made him stand out among traditional Hollywood actors. Unlike many Western stars, Johnson didn’t have to "act" like a cowboy—he was one.

Despite his growing success, Johnson often resisted stardom, preferring a simple, cowboy lifestyle over the glitz of Hollywood. However, he delivered his most celebrated performance in The Last Picture Show (1971), where he played Sam the Lion, a wise and kind-hearted small-town figure. His performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, proving his ability to bring depth and nuance to roles beyond traditional Westerns.
