Wife is SURE there are pocket doors trapped behind here. All the clues are present.. House build in 1892. Has separate entrance off the front porch to this room..walls are thick for no other reson..but I don't want to start pulling up trim and find our she's wrong..thoughts?

I need some help figuring out what color to paint my cabinets in my kitchen. They are about 50 years old and not in great condition or I probably wouldn’t pain them. Was thinking of doing a two tone but I just put grey plank flooring in and I’m not sure what would look good. White would be ok but I didn’t know how that would hold up on the bottom cabinets. Help! I need design ideas on how to close off this staircase so my toddler doesn’t fall off the side! Bonus points for design photos! I feel like since it wasn’t done in the beginning build it’s going to look make-shift and not fit in and I’m struggling to picture how we’d build in a banister.
Edit: I know it’s not up to code, we’re not the original owners, and the barn door and carpet can go
