Film preservation is always urgent. It always will be urgent. For every neglected film print or set of film elements that is not being stored under optimal conditions, that has not been checked or cleaned or scanned, the clock is ticking. - Martin Scorsese
The term “film preservation” now has an official ring to it. In one sense, that’s progress—it means that people take it seriously, which was not always the case. On the other hand, the fact that it has become official means that it has also ceased to be urgent, that the problem has been solv...

in Hitchcock's Psycho opened in New York 🚿🔪
Edited by George Tomasini, Psycho is most famous for its shower sequence among others. In the same scene, Hitchcock broke conventions by not adhering to the 180-degree rule as well as using jump cuts. The mental turbulence Janet Leigh's character Marion goes through while driving to California with stolen money is shown through close-ups, crossfades with the dark road and in in the scene where she is stopped by a cop.
While the film celebrates the 58th year of its release today, here is how the film majorly influenced filmmaking as such.
The Colours of Motion project explores the use of color in movies through artistic prints in which each line represents the average color of each frame in a particular frame. From to and Alice in Wonderland, films are turned into frame-by-frame bar codes that film fans and professionals in the world of color in film (like us!) can obsess over.
They make stunning art prints.

Women Film Pioneers Project is a scholarly resource exploring women’s global involvement at all levels of film production during the silent film era.
Perhaps the earliest production work available to women in the film industry was coloring work—hand-coloring dyes onto film prints frame by frame. Aesthetic assumptions also grounded this practice: females have long been assumed to be more attuned to color. Women were not only cheaper in general to employ but also were thought to be, with their supposed sensitivity and nimble fingers, innately suited to the detailed work of coloring films.
Women Film Pioneers Project is a scholarly resource exploring women’s global involvement at all levels of film production during the silent film era.
Many incredible female editors have been instrumental in some of the biggest booms in film history. For every Martin Scorsese, there’s a Thelma Schoonmaker who’s steering the ship towards cinema greatness.
By Lucia Fox-Shapiro In the early days of cinema, it wasn’t uncommon for women to be found in the editing room. Assembling reels and cutting negatives was tedious, detail-oriented work that often fell to young working-class women. Many female “cutters” during the silent era were unacknowledged...

Cortex v5.5's MTai Frame Rate Conversion represents a leap forward over conventional frame rate conversion processes that rely on duplicating or removing frames. The new tool uses machine learning to interpolate between frames, increasing or decreasing the frame rate without ghosting, stutter or distortion.

In 1950, there were two companies vying to be the first to create color TVs—CBS and RCA. When the FCC tested the two systems, the CBS system was approved on October 11th, 1950 - while the RCA system failed to pass because of low picture quality.
From 1957-61 it was the #1 show on TV. It's also the 2nd longest running television series of all time with 5 Emmys to boot. Quite the run.
The shower scene only lasts for 45 seconds in the final cut, but it reportedly took 7 days of shooting before Hitchcock was happy with it.

Sony's 4K restoration started in 2013 in preparation for #MrSmithGoesToWashington's 75th anniversary a year later. The majority of the original 35mm camera negative (1.37:1 aspect ratio) was bathed in a solution as each frame passed over light and was digitally scanned. The 1990s analog restoration was supervised by the Library of Congress using a photochemical process that forced 2nd and 3rd generation prints to sub for damaged sections; this time the worst sections were scanned using duplicate negatives and #FrankCapra’s personal 1st generation print, which Sony recovered in the mid-90s. The 4K/HDR presentation would require an additional round of restoration since the HDR toning extracted another level of detail. The film grain is much more pronounced, which is a good thing! (Plus, Sony doesn’t believe in reducing grain to appease folks who don’t appreciate it.) The overall grayscale has more definition in the mid-tones, giving #JimmyStewart’s face more clarity, the blacks are darker while holding detail and the highlights brighter and balanced with Joseph Walker’s cinematography. The wide shots of the Senate chambers filled with senators, spectators and the media have more precision, putting the 4K sharpness a couple of notches over the HD version. #filmrestoration #movies #restoredwithdrsnova Get DRS™NOVA 👉 https://lnkd.in/deT2TKJq
