The Sun doesn’t stay still in space. Along with Earth and the rest of our solar system, it travels around the center of the Milky Way at roughly 800,000 km/h. One complete journey, called a galactic year, takes about 225–250 million Earth years.
Since the Sun formed around 4.6 billion years ago, it has completed roughly 20 trips around the galaxy. In about 5 billion years, the Sun is expected to exhaust the hydrogen fuel in its core and expand into a red giant. By then, our solar system will have traveled around the Milky Way many more times.
