“A postal worker found this box taped shut on the side of a road at 6 AM. He heard a sound. When he opened it, she had given birth inside. Alone. In the dark. In a box that someone sealed expecting everything inside it to die.”
In the early hours of a Sunday morning in late March, a postal worker noticed a small cardboard box on the gravel shoulder of a rural road in western Virginia.
It was sealed tightly with several strips of packing tape. Whoever had closed it had intended for it to remain shut.
He almost drove past.
Then he heard a faint scratching sound.
He pulled over and listened.
Something was alive inside.
He removed the tape and opened the box.
The inside walls were covered with tiny, frantic claw marks. Cardboard pieces were scattered across the bottom.
The Squirrel inside had fought to escape for hours.
She had failed.
At the bottom of the box, lying on a dirty hand towel, was a thin female Squirrel. Her fur was damp and matted. Her tiny ribs were visible. Her eyes were half-shut, and her breathing was shallow.
Four newborn squirrel kits were pressed against her body.
Their eyes were sealed shut. Their mouths moved weakly. They were alive.
She had given birth inside a sealed box, in complete darkness, beside a road.
She had cleaned them, pulled them close, and used her tiny body to keep them warm through the cold night.
The postal worker called county animal services. A volunteer arrived within forty minutes, and the mother and babies were taken to a veterinarian.
The vet estimated that the box had been abandoned for approximately fourteen hours. The overnight temperature had dropped to 29°F. The box offered almost no insulation.
The mother was moderately hypothermic. Her blood sugar was dangerously low. She was severely dehydrated, and she had been producing milk while starving.
The kits were warm only because their mother had refused to leave them.
The scratches told the rest of the story. The deepest marks were near one corner, where she had repeatedly tried to reach air. Her claws were worn down, and her paws were raw.
She had tried to get out.
She failed.
Then she stopped fighting to save herself…
and began giving birth.
The veterinarian said, “At some point, she understood she wasn’t getting out. And she shifted everything she had—from saving herself to saving them. Someone sealed that box expecting everything inside it to die. She made sure that didn’t happen.”
She spent weeks recovering.
They named her Sunday after the day she was found.
All four kits survived.
Sunday remained under care until her babies were safe.
She sleeps in open spaces now and avoids boxes.
But whenever she rests, she curls her tiny body tightly around empty space, as if she is still sheltering four fragile babies.
Some instincts never leave.
Someone sealed that box expecting silence.
Instead… there were heartbeats.
She couldn’t save herself.
So she saved them.
