The danger of a catastrophic explosion seems to have been eliminated and tens of thousands of people have been allowed to return to their homes, although there is still a risk of a smaller explosion, fire, or leak, and 16,000 people remain under evacuation orders. Whatever happens going forward, the reader has drawn some important lessons here.

A dangerous chemical crisis is unfolding in Garden Grove, a densely populated city of more than 170,000 mostly Asian and Latino residents in Orange County, California. At a GKN Aerospace facility on Western Avenue, a tank holding approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate—a highly flammable and hazardous chemical used in plastics and acrylics—began overheating and venting vapors. Authorities warned that the tank could rupture, spill, or even explode. Estimates from officials on potential blast radiuses sent alarm across Orange County. Many people are facing the possibility that they may not have a safe home to return to at all, if the situation deteriorates further. Evacuation orders have affected roughly 50,000 people in Garden Grove and nearby areas, including parts of the neighboring cities of Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster. The nearby theme parks of Knotts Berry Farm and the Disneyland Resort continued packing in tourists and locals over the Memorial Day weekend as the danger loomed in the background, and in the very city of Garden Grove, the popular Strawberry festival went ahead without interruption. Meanwhile, emergency crews have worked since Thursday to cool the tank, monitor it by drone, and put containment measures in place in case the chemical spills.

As of this writing, no injuries had been reported, and officials said air monitoring had not detected widespread contamination, but many people have reported irritation and illness they believe to be linked to the chemical leak, and tens of thousands of people, mostly working class and people of color, have had their lives upended by the evacuation.

It will likely be some time before we know the full chain of causes: what exactly failed, who knew what, whether maintenance or management decisions contributed, what role regulatory oversight played, or the extent of harm people may suffer in lost wages, the physical and mental stress of displacement, short- and long-term health effects, or property damage. But this much is already clear: a densely populated, largely poor and immigrant area of Orange County was suddenly made to live with the consequences of a hazardous industrial process controlled by a major global aerospace corporation.

In the U.S., toxic facilities and pollution from industrial corridors have long been concentrated among neighborhoods of the oppressed: especially Black, Latino, Native, immigrant, poor, and working-class communities. This phenomenon has come to be popularly known as environmental racism: an ongoing process rooted in white supremacy and interwoven with how capitalism-imperialism works in this country. In the way the U.S. has been shaped by genocide, slavery, segregation, redlining, freeway construction, and other more subtle ways, the most dire consequences have always come down on oppressed people.

Orange County is known for its sandy beaches, master planned suburbs, theme parks, malls, and sunshine. But northern and central Orange County are also home to dense working-class, immigrant, Vietnamese, Latino, Korean, Arab, Black, white, and multinational communities. As rents here skyrocket year after year, increasing numbers of people live paycheck to paycheck. Many cannot easily evacuate, miss work, pay for hotels, get medical care, or navigate emergency systems in English. In the face of the chemical leak, thousands are packing into shelters hastily set up by authorities.

GKN Aerospace is not a marginal operation. It describes itself as a “global aerospace leader” and reports £3.6 billion in 2025 sales, 16,000 employees, operations in 12 countries, and 32 manufacturing locations. GKN is a key part of Melrose Industries, a major British aerospace and defense business. The Garden Grove facility is a node in a global chain of high-tech production bound up with commercial aviation as well as supply chains for the U.S./NATO imperialist bloc militaries.

You are told that the Russian and Chinese revolutions of the 20th century were unworkable “utopian projects” that turned into “totalitarian nightmares.” This is the capitalist-imperialist system talking — drilling into your head that this is the best of all possible worlds. But this does not stand up to the facts.

Raymond Lotta will cut through the lies and slanders, and set the record straight about humanity’s first attempts to create societies free of exploitation and oppression. He will bring out the truth of the history and achievements of these first socialist revolutions—as well as their errors and problems, and how capitalism was restored in those countries. "The strike started ten days after 300 detainees issued a powerful letter exposing how they’re being stripped of their basic rights, and that the government is violating its own laws. They were kidnapped and detained without even meaningful hearings, threatened with deportations to countries they’ve never been to, kept in inhumane and unhealthy conditions. The immigrants who signed this letter come from diverse countries throughout Latin America and the world: Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Cuba, Haiti, Afghanistan, Turkey, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Costa Rica, China, Honduras, Hungary, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Jamaica. Some have been here in the U.S. for many years. This was the second of, as of now, three letters issued from the detainees at Delaney.

Their second letter says in part, “We feel vulnerable and, in a way, kidnapped—detained without justification—not to mention that we are being tortured physically and psychologically due to the poor food resources provided in these detention centers. We see with deep helplessness and frustration that our due process, rights, and defense have been violated, disregarding benefits granted under the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments of the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. Families are being destroyed and separated, where there are children, nieces, and minors who are suffering a very strong psychological impact because they do not understand the situation, and in some cases they have witnessed the arrests of their relatives, who have been struck by tragedy and the economic burden, since in most cases we are heads of household.”

Part 2: Rights Are Not "Endowed" by "God," and "To Secure These Rights" Is Not the Reason Governments Are Established.

The title of this article is an echo—and refutation—of this famous passage from the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed.

As I will show in this article: Every major part of this statement, and this statement as a whole, contains inventions and distortions of reality and history, which have been utilized in the service of real and repeated atrocity, on the part of those who have “governed” this country, throughout its history.

I recently read John Green’s new book, “Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection,” which inspired me to write to Revcom readers. The book is a powerful call for justice in the face of savage inequalities and is worth reading.

This system has created a world where diseases that should have been wiped out long ago cause massive suffering and death. Tuberculosis (TB) is a prime example.

In the past, TB was called consumption because it consumed its victim’s body causing them to waste away. In Europe, during the 1800s about one-quarter of all deaths were due to the disease. In the U.S. today, most people rarely think about TB, perhaps only when they get a TB scratch test after they are hired for a job. This is because a cure for TB was developed in the 1950s and most people in this country have access to the necessary treatments.

Yet TB kills one and one-quarter million people each year, especially in the poor countries of the Global South and is the leading cause of death by infectious disease worldwide. Green quotes physicians and scientists who say that while it is not possible to eliminate tuberculosis, with basic healthcare not a single person need die from the disease. Let that sink in. More than one million people every year—who have friends and families, hopes and dreams, who are full of potential—have their lives extinguished needlessly by a disease that was cured 75 years ago!

Immigrants In New Jersey on heroic hunger strike:
Delaney Hall immigration detention center in New Jersey is now the site of the most significant mass protest since the uprising against ICE in Minneapolis in January. This protest—focused against the horrible conditions in the center and the vicious attacks from ICE—has involved masses of people, detainees, and high-level New Jersey Democratic politicians.

Hundreds of detainees inside Delaney launched a powerful hunger and labor strike on May 22, sending shockwaves into the broader society and halls of power. This is still unfolding, with growing support and also escalating repression against these protesters and their supporters on the outside.

This is a window into the advancing fascism, and to some of the basis to defeat it. Digging deeper, it is also an indicator of the bankruptcy of the whole system of capitalism-imperialism, the need for a fundamentally different system, and the basis for real revolution.
