Q&A with Tammy Smith
Q: When did you discover your voice was a gift from God?
Tammy: At age 7. My mother, a classical pianist, heard me sing while teaching a student. She was so amazed by the tone of my voice that she had me sing for my father and later at church. From there, I became one of the youngest choir directors in town—using my voice to move hearts and bring people into a spiritual experience.
Q: Was there a defining moment when you knew music was your assignment?
Tammy: Yes. When I realized I could not only sing but bring healing to others, it became clear—this was an “I must do this” calling.
Q: How would you describe your sound?
Tammy: Warm, engaging, lively with energy, yet smooth enough to bring peace. My sound reflects my authentic walk with God and sparks curiosity about my story.
Q: What happens in the spirit when you sing?
Tammy: Burdens lift. Joy rises. Inspiration flows. People begin to smile again.
Q: How do you see your voice as a ministry tool?
Tammy: My voice is a weapon of warfare. It breaks yokes, lifts confusion, and ushers in calm, healing, and restoration.
Q: Tell us about the first song you wrote.
Tammy: “This Morning.” It was a simple song of gratitude—for the gift of life, breath, and knowing that God lives inside me.
Q: How do you define a psalmist versus a singer?
Tammy: A psalmist composes, and ministers' songs rooted in prayer, scripture, and worship. A singer focuses on vocal expression and performance—bringing life to songs written by others. Both are valuable, but the psalmist carries a special assignment to minister biblical truths through music.
Q: Do you believe gospel music still breaks chains?
Tammy: Absolutely. Gospel music birthed from prayer and anointing destroys despair, anxiety, and spiritual dryness. Classics like “Amazing Grace” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” still break chains and restore faith today.
Q: How do you prepare spiritually before ministering or recording?
Tammy: Fasting, prayer, seclusion, and studying God’s Word.
Q: Has music carried you through personal trials?
Tammy: Yes. I’ve survived breast cancer three times while supporting my husband through prostate cancer. Singing “The Blood” gave me strength and calmed my fear during my hardest season.
Q: How do you discern which songs to release?
Tammy: I listen to the Holy Spirit. Timing and the spiritual climate guide me—whether it’s a song for peace, comfort, celebration, revival, personal devotion, worship, or intercession. It’s all about what God is moving in the moment.
Q: Which of your songs is most personal to you?
Tammy: “Instrument of Praise,” written by my daughter She’von. She captured who I am and my lifelong calling. That song comes straight from her heart, and it reflects my heart as God’s instrument of praise.
Q: How did growing up in Chicago shape you?
Tammy: It taught me resilience. I learned confidence, strength, vigilance, and responsibility from my parents. I learned that worship is not a performance—it’s warfare, healing, and communion. My ear was trained not just for melody, but for the anointing. I learned to sing through silence and to love people deeply.
Q: How has living in Florida influenced your music and ministry?
Tammy: Florida has opened doors to education, summits, conferences, and networking with great entrepreneurs. My music has now expanded nationally and internationally, guided by phenomenal mentors.
Q: How has your family supported your calling?
Tammy: My family has been everything—loving, praying, traveling with me, attending engagements, and even serving as armor bearers. They’ve been steadfast supporters and protectors of my ministry.
Q: What spiritual values did your parents instill in you?
Tammy: Love God, be saved, seek His face first, believe in yourself, love others, be authentic, and always act wisely. Those values continue to guide my life and ministry.
Q: As a Black woman of faith, what legacy and leadership do you carry? Tammy: I walk deliberately as an example to enrich others’ lives. I stand on the shoulders of my parents and legendary leaders, embracing love, dignity, honor, tenacity, and value in all I do.
