Born into poverty in Panama, McSween migrated to the United States during the 1950s, chasing the American Dream amid the systemic racism of the Jim Crow era. Through rare archival footage of McSween speaking in his own voice and interviews with Blanton Canady, Rev. Janette Wilson, and Jeanette Simpson, the film chronicles his rise from a determined track star to a history-making insurance executive, McDonald’s franchisee, and a key figure in civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. McSween’s journey is more than a rags-to-riches tale; it is a testament to the power of entrepreneurship and activism to break barriers and uplift communities. A meaningful day in Los Angeles.

Following the screening of CIRILO, A Legacy Untold at the 23rd Annual LA Harbor International Film Festival, I was honored to receive recognitions from both the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles.

The County recognition was issued by Supervisor Janice Hahn, acknowledging the film’s contribution to civic life and community storytelling across Los Angeles County.

The City of Los Angeles, through Councilmember Tim McOsker, presented a Certificate of Commendation during the festival’s DocSunday program at the Port of Los Angeles.

From its Oscar qualifying theatrical run to its NAACP Image Award nomination, it has been an extraordinary journey for this film and for the story of Cirilo McSween.

Grateful to the LA Harbor International Film Festival, NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, and everyone who continues to support this project.

Two-time Grammy winner and actress Ann Nesby recently appeared on the nationally broadcast Portia show on FOX, where she discussed her current projects, including her role in CIRILO, A Legacy Untold.

Nesby narrates the film, contributes to its soundtrack, and serves as Executive Producer. Her involvement was a deliberate, creative, and strategic decision, strengthening the film’s narrative authority and cultural resonance.

The collaboration reflects a professional relationship spanning more than two decades, rooted in music entertainment, national public relations campaigns, creative direction, and visual production. That foundation informed the packaging and positioning of CIRILO, A Legacy Untold.

Following the premiere of CIRILO, A Legacy Untold - Cirilo McSween Documentary at the 34th Pan African Film & Arts Festival, filmmaker Justin O Cooper reflects on responsibility, audience impact, and strategy in a live Q&A. He discusses the importance of documenting overlooked history, what it meant to see the film on the screen one year after its Atlanta theatrical release, and his decision to produce it as a short by reverse-engineering a proof of concept in a risk-averse industry. The film later entered the Academy Screening Room and received NAACP Image Award recognition, reinforcing that while CIRILO began as a short, it was built with a larger vision in mind.

CIRILO, A Legacy Untold is honored to be recognized as a nominee for Outstanding Short Form Documentary (Film) at the 57th NAACP Image Awards.

We extend our sincere thanks to the NAACP Image Awards for this distinction and to executive producer and narrator Ann Nesby for her enduring support and belief in this project.

Our deepest appreciation goes to the Chicago-based production team whose dedication and craft brought this story to life, as well as to the Cirilo McSween Estate and Film Independent for their partnership and support.
