"Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has responded to criticism levied at her by developer and former mayoral rival Rick Caruso with a critique of her own: that he’s “sad and bitter.”

Upon news that an arrest was made in the sparking of the Palisades Fire, Caruso released a statement calling the impacts of the January fires “a failure of government on an epic level, starting with Mayor Bass.”

“Her and the city’s incompetence, mismanagement, and failure to plan, prepare, and predeploy directly led to people dying, thousands of lives being upended, and put on full display the consequences of ineffective and incapable leadership,” Caruso said on social media."

"SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Thirty years ago, Willie Cruz was shocked when he learned the Southern California oil refinery where he worked was shutting down.

Cruz, now a 61-year-old living in Arizona, had spent five years working in the environmental department when Powerine Oil Company said it would close the plant in Santa Fe Springs, southeast of Los Angeles.

Cruz feared getting laid off again if he stayed in the industry. He decided to look into respiratory therapy, in part because he’s asthmatic. A federal job training program paid for his schooling. "

California is grappling with how to support oil workers who are being displaced from their jobs amid the state's energy transition.

"The final waterborne crude was received on Sept. 30, and the final crude processing date is expected to be around Oct. 16.

The facility is executing a detailed schedule to safely idle operations. Several process units have been placed in an idle state. The remaining units will be idled in a phased manner through the end of 2025.

Remediation and decommissioning efforts are progressing. In the third quarter, the company expects to accrue environmental expenses of approximately $70 million in the Refining segment related to its future groundwater mitigation plans, along with an asset retirement charge of approximately $30 million in the Midstream segment related to transportation assets that will no longer be used as a result of the facility idling operations."

"The federal government on Thursday entered its second day of a shutdown amid an impasse on Capitol Hill over competing congressional spending bills. President Donald Trump and Republicans have cast blame for the shutdown on Democrats' health care demands, while Democrats insist Republicans need to negotiate. The Senate is scheduled to return Friday for another vote."

Vice President JD Vance, while speaking at a White House press briefing, said that he does not think the government shutdown will be long.
