Are you following Pictures From the Fringe co-founder Sal Litvak at his Accidental Talmudist page? Every day, he brings you Jewish wisdom, humor, insights and reflections. For an example, check out this classic Jewish joke. https://www.facebook.com/accidentaltalmudist/photos/a.281229641972168.59006.227905913971208/704860349609093/?type=1

An old Jewish man finally got his visa to leave the USSR and emigrate to Israel. At the Moscow airport, a customs official found his bust of Lenin.

"What is that?"

"WHAT is that?! You mean WHO is that?! That is Lenin, the genius who created our worker's paradise!"

The Soviet official chuckled and let the old man through.

When the old man arrived at Tel Aviv airport, an Israeli customs official found the bust of Lenin.

"What is that?"

"WHAT is that?! You mean WHO is that?! That is Lenin, the son-of-a-b*tch! I will display him over my toilet for all the years he stopped me from coming home!"

The Israeli official laughed and let him through.

When the old man arrived at his family's house in Jerusalem, his grandson saw him unpack the bust.

"Who is that?"

"WHO is that?! You mean WHAT is that?! THAT, my child, is eight pounds of gold!"

Some possibly supernatural things going on over at Accidental Talmudist, all emerging from a good deed for a man who had died with no friends or family to mourn him. Perhaps this whole episode will inspire a scene in a future Pictures From the Fringe production? Stay tuned to find out. (And may Eddie's memory be for a blessing.)

My pals, something happened last night, and Nina & I have been debating all day whether to share it.

Yesterday, this community came together to honor Eddie Dinkowitz, a mentally disabled man who died with no friends or family to mourn for him.

Some of us attended his funeral, and over 500 people wrote heartfelt messages to Eddie on this page and the Mt. Sinai Cemetery website. A member of our community created a permanent memorial for him at FindAGrave.com, and another found his high school yearbook picture at Ancestry.com.

The outpouring of love was simply remarkable. All of which left Nina and me wondering if Eddie was aware of it. We mourned that he had died alone, and prayed that this amazing send-off would comfort his soul.

The last thing we said before falling asleep was, "Eddie, if you are receiving the messages, please show us a sign."

A few hours later, we were shocked awake by the ear-splitting ring of our alarm system. A motion sensor had been activated in our office behind the garage.

Like a schmuck in a comedy, I went out there with a golf club in my hand. There was no intruder.

Nothing had moved in that room. There was no insect near the sensor.

We've lived here seven and a half years, and this has never happened before. We tested the motion sensor in various ways, and there is no malfunction.

Even if there is a rational explanation for this event, it's a huge coincidence that it happened on the same night we asked for a sign.

I've only experienced one other coincidence in my life that big: the day I happened to buy Book One of the Talmud on Day One of the seven and a half year Daf Yomi cycle.

I took that event as a sign, embarked on the quest, and eventually became the Accidental Talmudist. That's why this community exists, and why Eddie Dinkowitz eventually entered into all our hearts.

If last night was a sign from Eddie, then I believe the alarm was more than a sign of gratitude. It was a wake up call. Yes, it's great we sent him off in style, but Eddie should not have died alone.

My pals, our Sages teach that we must VISIT THE SICK. It is a huge mitzvah.

Let's do it. If someone is sick in your world, go visit. If you don't know anyone who's sick, visit a local nursing home. The residents will be thrilled!

If you can't visit, call. If you can't call, write. Time is precious, and the seconds are ticking away. Tomorrow is not promised.

During these Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we've just received a wake up call from Eddie on behalf of the sick and lonely everywhere.

Let's answer.

Leave a message at Eddie's permanent memorial:

That Guy... Who Was in That Thing (2012)

We recently caught the 2012 documentary film, "That Guy...Who Was in That Thing" about so-called "character actors," and featuring Saving Lincoln's Bruce Davison (the feature of previous posts due to his appearances in the X-Men films). One problem - see the photo below...can you spot the error? Mistake aside, the film gives an inside look at the lives of "those guys," who you recognize, but you're not sure from where...check it out (available streaming/on-demand from Showtime, if you have it...)

Directed by Ian Roumain, Michael Schwartz. With Xander Berkeley, Bruce Davison, Craig Fairbrass, Zach Grenier. Welcome to The Saving Lincoln Store -

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) comes out this weekend! But what does this have to do with us here at Pictures From the Fringe? Very little. (Although mutants are pretty darned fringe.) But it's as good a time as any to remind you that Bruce Davison - who played a Senator in the first two X-Men movies - also served fictional political time as Secretary of State Seward in Saving Lincoln. As for this weekend's Days of Future Past juggernaut, look for When Do We Eat?'s pater familias, Michael Lerner, playing - what else? - a Senator. We're not sure what this all means, but we're sending our research department to IMDB to find other hidden @picsfromthefringe connections. At least, we will, after we get back from the movie theater. A good weekend to you all out there, mutants and non-mutants alike. :) (And remember, if you'd like to see these actors in the political roles mentioned above, get your copies of When Do We Eat and Saving Lincoln via the link below...) http://shop.savinglincoln.com

The Great Barrier Reef, Australian Rules Football, and the Accidental Talmudist?

Absolutely! I am thrilled to announce that your pal Sal - the AT – is headed to the Land Down Under for
Limmud Oz Melbourne, June 7-9, 2014.

Aussie pals, I certainly hope you’ll join me for this special event, so we can learn together!

First held in 1999, Limmud OZ is Australia’s annual pluralist Festival of Jewish learning and culture, hosted alternately by the Sydney and Melbourne Jewish communities.

While many presenters are local or interstate educators and performers, a few speakers are invited as overseas guests. I’m honored to be representing, the American Jewish community, the American film community, and of course, the international Accidental Talmudist community of 60,000 wisdom-seekers and wisdom-bearers.

I’ll be leading four sessions:

Talmudic Tales, Personal Meaning: A Storyteller's Favorite Stories from the Sea of Talmud,

The Accidental Talmudist – An Unexpected Journey,

When Do We Eat? – Film Screening with Q&A,

Filmmaker Panel alongside Danny Ben Moshe and Matthew Kalman.

Limmud OZ is part of an international movement which started more than 30 years ago in the UK. Since then, the concept of a volunteer conference where everyone has something to teach has gone global, with gatherings in 60 different communities.

I hope to see some of you there, and others very soon in a community near you!

Shabbat Shalom!
